Hi everyone,

I'm 3 days post-op and still very bloated and gassy. It hurts to drink liquids (in my chest) and I am burping constantly. I feel like I'm about 6 months pregant - my stomach is so full of air. Any suggestions?

That's exactly the way it happened with me! I was painfully bloated for 10 days. My abdomen was bloated and I looked bigger than when I went in! lots of burping and other "gasses" continued for the next 2 weeks, but I can say that 4 weeks post-op, i'm almost back to normal. Still really burpy!

That is normal. You have just had a major surgery and your system is fragile. The gas and bloating is a compination of Carbondioxide and the swelling. You need to remember that they put a good sized tube down your throat and that will be sore up to about a week. It hurts in your chest form the anithesia and will also go away in time. You may also start feeling some pain in you upper (left) shoulder do to the Carboddioxide.

Call your office right away if you have any question. They want and expect you to call for any reason and it doesn't bother them.

I also felt mentally disconnected for a couple of weeks. Wasn't that fun...uuggg.....lol.

Sorry about the spelling. No time to check.

DITTO! Milk of Magnesia - ugh, even the thought of it makes me gag. I agree and comiserate with everything you have said in the above paragraph. Guess that's a good sign - it means neither of us are weird or abnormal. Well, at least not due to post-op symptoms!

Stock up on Gas-X; I'm a couple months post surgery and still have to take it on an almost daily basis. The first few days/weeks of gas are awful, I know; hurt more than surgery in my opinion. Make sure though it's really just gas pain and not something else; if you begin to have trouble breathing or any severe pain make sure to see your doctor right away. We've had a few people on here end up with pulmonary embollisms they thought were just gas, so always make sure to follow up if something doesn't feel right.

I heard to move, move, move to help the gas. I had previously had shoulder surgery and the gas pain in my left shoulder reminded me of that. I had severe pain for the first couple of days. To help, I moved as much as I felt that I could and also found that laying on a heating pad helped me. I still have some of the gas, but the pain is almost completely gone.

Thanks everyone! So, I think I discovered the bulk of yesterday's severe gas pressure and pain. I mixed in Benefiber in my morning shake. Duh. I just thought I could use some extra Fiber since I can't eat my fiber Cereal, breads, etc. This morning, it was much better and today I have been able to drink without pain. Still burping, but its down to a tolerable level. I still feel awful, have a low fever, tired, weak, and want to eat a steak. But hey - steak is part of what got me here in the first place, so I really can't complain. I will be much happier when I'm not on this awful liquid diet anymore! 11 days remaining....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
