ACK- dental emergency

Recommended Posts

I'm due to be banded Friday, April 1st, and a tooth that was supposed to get a root canal just had a chunk break off :o ... there's no pain, since that molar was dead anyway. It's my own fault, I've been pushing off the procedure since my dental insurance covers so little and I've had so many other medical bills with the surgery coming up. Do I wait until after I've been banded? I'm pretty sure they'll just pull the tooth, since it's the last molar in my bottom jaw and they did the same with my other one. I had dry mouth for years due to meds and those back molars suffered because of it. Dh said call my surgeon's office and find out, and then the dentist. *sigh* do I really need all that right now? At least there's no pain.

If your not in pain, and your do to be banded on 4-1-11 I would get banded, then have the tooth done..You will be on pain meds, and if they pull the tooth, well it's like killing 2 birds with 1 stone

Good Luck with the Decision.

Shirley.

Nooooo! Do not sign up for major dental work right after you've been banded. In fact, you should be avoiding the dentist all together for at least three months after because you will receive heparin during your surgery and it's got a long life. You may have uncontrolled bleeding if you try a root canal or a pull right after surgery.

I didn't know that about the heparin.. no one at my surgeon's office said anything about that... well, I don't have the time to get it done beforehand... I guess I'll just have a molar with a corner broken off for a while :P

Definitely get it checked out first. If your tooth gets infected it will be very unsafe for you to have surgery. Good luck with your tooth and surgery :)

If you have no infection, and can live with it. Call and ask the Nurse where your surgery is at are you going to be on blood thinners? I was not. If yes. Then go to a Dentist, If no ! then I would Wait. Unless you have artificial joints.

Then you have to be on antibiotics for a while in case of infection, before they take the tooth out. This way the infection can't spread to the artificial joint..

Did you call your surgeon and/or your dentist about your tooth? All the posters did bring up some good advise. I have been working in dental field for 13 years and can not tell you much without seeing an x-ray and the tooth. I hate to see anyone get a tooth extracted. If you were told the tooth needs root canal therapy, the tooth IS infected, even if you do not feel pain.

One option you might want to ask your dentist and/or your surgeon about is taking some antibiotics to hold the dental infection at bay until the heparin is out of your system. My surgeon gave me 7 days of liquid antibiotics along with the pain meds after surgery to avoid any type of infection.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
