Sharp pain around port site when bending over

Recommended Posts

I am almost 3 weeks post-op and the past couple of days I have been getting sharp pain under my port site whenever I bend over. Has anyone else experienced this? I did go back to work this past week and babysit a 8 month old Friday evening. Did I just over-do it?

Any thoughts?

Your port can take weeks to heal. Remember that it was sewn to your abdominal muscle so you will feel some pain. I'd try to take it easy. Give it time to heal. Good luck!

I had my surgery on 2/23 and about 2 weeks out I too had a similar experience. I thought I had overdone it with cleaning the previous weekend. I went and saw my surgeon for post-op checkup and I told him. I had an xray to check placement, an ultrasound to check for Fluid, and bloodwork. Xray and ultrasound showed placement was perfect and no Fluid. My bloodwork, however, showed that my white cell count was a little high so my surgeon put me on antibiotics. The pain went away in 2 to 3 days, but the next week my white cell count remained a little elevated (same as previous week). I just went last week (2 weeks from post-op check-up) and my blood count was back to normal. He is having me stay on antibiotics for another 2 weeks (a month total) just to be sure. He ruled it a "foreign body" causing this elevation and was concerned about possible infection. Perhaps giving your office a call wouldn't hurt?

That is interesting! I have my first post-op checkup on Tuesday and will certainly bring it up. Antibiotics might already be in my future because I have 1 insicision right on my pants line that is red with a little yellow gunk. I called them regarding this on Friday and since I am going in so soon they said to keep it clean, dry and bandaid if needed.

Thanks for sharing your expereince.

It will hurt from time to time even as you get further and further away from having surgery or mine does at least.

It took about a month for the bending to be back to normal. I had minimal pain after surgery but the port site hurt from the inside when I would bend. Gets better every day but try not to lift any heavier babies!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
