post surgery energy levels

Recommended Posts

hi all

i'm 2 weeks post op and started on soft mushy foods middle of last week. i am really sleepy all day and lacking energy. i'm not a hugely energetic person normally but i feel like all i can do is lay on the couch. i'm only up to about 650-700 cal a day so maybe it's just that. am getting 60 Protein and around 40-60 carbs per day and am drinking enough Water and taking proper Vitamins. only thing i can think of is that i'm without my coffee and that the calories are still low??

is this common?

I am a month post op and still having problems with energy level. Fortunately I am not working right now so I get up and go walk an hour each day, come home and take a shower and usually end up taking a 3 hour nap. I don't like it but I know I have to slow down some and heal. I have never been a sit around person but I over did it about 2 weeks ago and ended up having some pulling at my incision sight which caused a lot of pain. It was a quick reminder to take it easy. I am down 28 lbs today and am so happy for each pound gone but have to remember that the tiredness is only temporary and I am ready for my energy level to come back.

Have you checked with your surgeon's office about this? I was a little over a week out, had to lay down and rest - even after something as simple as a shower. I started chewable Iron supplements and felt better within 2 days. (I had ordered them when I ordered my Multivitamin and calcium) Could have been coincidence, but I had problems with anemia during pregnancy and this felt just like that, so I treated myself since i already had them on hand. I thnk you need to talk to your doctor's staff and see if this is fatigue something they normally see or if they want you to do something different.

good idea to check. i'm going in early next week for follow up blood tests so i'll make sure they test for anything that could be related to fatigue. thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
