Is it ok to drink coffee after? I thought I read somewhere to avoid caffeine.

most dr's say to avoid it so i asked my dr and did some research as to the WHY we need to avoid caffeine and it makes sense for the early stages right after surgery. caffeine is a diuretic and when you are trying to get in 64 oz of Water a day, that's the last thing you need. also, caffeine can increase appetite and irritate your stomach, which at first you need to be gentle with. i've heard a lot of people say they drink it with no problems, but i'm trying to hold off for a couple of weeks at least. it's driving me crazy though! i have had some black tea, but that's a pretty poor substitute for the real thing!

i miss you, coffee

i miss you, coffee

I am right there with you. I had a pot per morning habit that I stopped cold turkey. I didn't load it with sugar or anything fun, just a splash of fat free milk, but I'd take 2 oz of it black right now if it was on my post op instructions list!!

My nutritionist said coffee was ok. Since I like her answer I am going with it- I am a coffee addict. Haven't had any problems.

I have 1 cup of regular and 1 cup of Decaf every morning.... I still use a little bit of 1/2 and 1/2 and splenda. I hasn't bothered me. I just make sure to account for the 1/2 and 1/2 in my daily calories and drink extra Water for the caffeine. My doc said I should use coffeemate, but it's so artificial that I decided to go with a real product and just make sure I count it in my calories.

For the Decaf haters out there-I love my decaf chocolate Raspberry it is almost like a dessert. I have switched to decaf-the NP at our doctors office told us the last thing you want immediately post op is to be in pain and have a caffeine headache. She too has had surg and is a great wealth of information, I wish everyone had someone like Lynn to ask questions of.

My Dr. gave me a cuppa in hospital after I burst into tears. It was heaven!

I've been drinking it every morning ever since and it hasn't affected me at all. I'm down over 60 lbs in 16 weeks!

I'm sticking to my morning coffee! rolleyes.gif

My coffee drinking habits never changed, in fact it was the first thing I was given in hospital - but I' drink mainly plain coffee with a dash of skim milk, not into fattening lattes and cappucinos and such. I wouldnt make fancy starbucks concoctions a regular part of your diet.

I, also, drink a cup of coffee every morning. I add non-fat milk. I need that caffeine jilt. I have at times not been able to drink a cup due to restriction in the morning, but mostly I have no problem with it. It is the only caffeine I have. tea just doesn't do it for me, and I don't drink de-caf. Karen
