I am not a gastric bypasser but I am a bandster who looked at both options. I was banded on Feb 23 of this year. My decision to go with the band was because my mother had gastric bypass 20+ years ago and ended up gaining all of her weight back plus she had several nutritional problems. For one, she became anemic and had to take B12 shots every day. The bypass surgery didn't allow her to make adjustments when she over ate and eventually she had a larger stomach again. My best friend's mom also had gastric bypass and she ended up gaining all of her weight back over 12 years and she had complications from being potassium deficient and died last year. She ended up weighing 150 lbs more than before she had her surgery. For me, the choice to go with be band was because the band is adjustable. As long as I don't over eat and stretch out my band, I can always fill and unfil as needed to meet my weight loss needs. It also did not cut anything out of me so I don't forsee having any nutritional problems. So far with my band, I have lost 24 lbs in a few days over a month. I had my first fill 2 days ago and right now it is perfect. My surgery down time was minimal and I have so much hope for the first time that I will be able to not only reach my goal, but maintain it. I have lost many times in the past but as soon as I would hit the goal, I would start eating like I did before the latest "diet" and eventually I would gain it all back. With my band, it's like having a little tender angel sitting on my shoulder telling me when to stop. :P

I haven't...but I know a number of people who have and have been happy with their choice. Some of them are here on this forum. I hope they'll step forward.

I was banded in Nov. and have no problems, I came home the same day and cleaned house. lol Gastric is so severe and I have had several clients who had it and after a few years gained it all back. With the band it's adjustable so if you start gaining you just have it tightened. Good luck and you will make the right decision. :)

Are you speaking of a band over a bypass? I have read of a few people doing it, yes. It is not without risks.

I believe there was a thread about it a year or so ago on thinnertimes.com

You could also look into having your pouch revised if it has stretched. They can return it to its original size.

I'd have to see the actual description clinical successes demonstating 1) RNY can be reversed adequately; 2) Band surgeon would be able/willing to make such conversion. If someone has active link please post.

It's not a conversion. There is no reversal/conversion of bypass. What they're doing is placing a band *in addition to* in order to help the person deal with the hunger. There is a honeymoon phase with bypass (and sleeve) where the ghrelin is shut off so there's no hunger. After awhile though, the body figures out how to produce it again so a number of sleeve and bypass patients are getting the band in addition to their previous surgery which cannot be reversed.

I was able to attend one of my surgeons bariatric presentations to the physicians at me healthcare system, because I work closely with them for diabetes and he did say that has has put a band over bypass when the opening from the pouch to the intestines has stretched to provide restriction. I would talk to your surgeon. I know it has been done, but I don't know the details. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
