Problems keeping food or drinks down

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am new to this forum. I started my journey in January 2009 and had my surgery June 2009. I started at 300 pounds and I am currently down 80 pounds since then. I am so pleased with my results and never regretted my decison hovever here in the last few months I haven't been able to lose anymore weight. What I am having problems with now is that I am running in to periods where for more than a few days I am not able to keep anything down not even Water. It feels like I have heartburn too as I am having to throw up whatever I eat. I have seen the doctor and they usually will take out Fluid from the band but it seems like that isn't helping. Has anyone out there had this problem also if so what did you do about it?

I went through something similar, but mine came on all of a sudden. About two weeks ago, it hurt to breath, eat or drink. I called the doctor, and I went in that same day. He took all my Fluid out. I went last week for a fluro, and he said I had been tight for so long it caused like a mushroom above the band. I guess that was causing my paint and everything. I would get completely unfilled, and then let them check you.

I had heartburn for a few weeks before I went to the doctor. That is a sign you may be too tight.

Sounds like you are definitely in the red zone. I was not sure from your post if you have actually had any fill removed yet...if you have, and you are still having problems, then you need more removed! I would worry about slippage with your symptoms...you need to see your band doc and i would not delay if I were you!

I agree with the others. Not to be a doom-sayer, but that is how I started out last November and last week had revision surgery for a slip. I think I waited too long to have it checked and then missed 3 appointments due to the constant snow storms here....Please go to doc.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
