Question for those whose insurance paid for banding...

Recommended Posts

Did your insurance also pay for the other tests and office visits? I have to see my PCP and get a referral for an upper GI and endoscopy (I think that's what it was), and I have to meet with a dietician and a social worker before I can get in the door to talk to the surgeon. Are those things usually covered? LBS is clearly medically necessary, but I don't know if those other office visits are.

PCP visits had to pay co-pay ($10)

Pre-op test (EKG, Upper GI, etc) - all covered by insurance

Dietician- had to pay co-pay of $20 at each visit

Psych. test - I didnt need one but it was not covered by insurance

You probably just have to pay Co-pays.. Like you would any other time you go see your PCP for anything. You can ask your insurance provider as well. Good Luck with everything

My insurance paid for everything except the psych evaluation, too. Even though they excluded banding (at the time) all the pre-op evaluations and testing wasn't necessarily related to banding, so they covered it. My plan covered treatment for morbid obesity so anything coded with that diagnosis was a covered item.

My insurance covered all of the pre-op testing 100% (I paid co-pays at office visits) The psych visit wsa covered in a seperate mental health insurance policy that my husbands job provides. The back of my insurance card has a number for substance abuse, that is usually mental health services. My evaluation was covered all but $25. I was all too happy to send in that check, I was told it would not be covered and would cost between $400 and $600. So all in all yes my pre-op testing was covered. Now if I could get them to cover more than one follow-up appointment I would be a happy camper. ~Mandy

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
