I take pills with no problems; big ones as well.

My doctor discussed taking pills with me. He says that you don't want them to get stuck, so you need to crush them. Not just crush, but pulverize them so that there are no jagged corners that can stab you. I don't think we discussed how soon I could take them after surgery though. I'm only good for a day with missed medication though.

I am 6 days post op, I took mine the next day when I came home. My dr said any pill size of an M&M or smaller would be fine, also capsules should be fine. My experience, has been no trouble, I do stand and take them one-at-a-time now each w/ a sip of Water as oppossed to swallowing them all at one time, before the band. All mine are small.

I was given pills to take for pain immediately post-op. When I questioned taking pills, I was told I wouldn't have a problem, and I didn't.

That said, last month I had another outpatient surgery (not band related), and I could just tell the stress of the process had really tightened my band. I took one look at the vicodin pill he prescribed for pain and decided to split it with my pill splitter. There was no way I wanted to risk getting stuck, just after surgery. I've never pulverized any meds or gotten the liquid equivalents.

I always find it amazing how the advice varies from surgeon to surgeon. I trust my doc, but they can't all be right!

I do remember my consult saying I will need liquids 1 year after being banded. Any of you a year out and still taking meds. add how many cc's and band size at the time you take your pills. Thanks

i think it depends on the dr what advice you get. mine never even mentioned anything to me about it and i read about it here! i've been crushing mine and it's fine. better to be safe.

Since I am only a week out I take my pills crushed. My pain pill I cut off real tiny and my Vitamins are chewable. I take synthroid every morning and that's small enough that I can just swallow it. My surgeon told me after about a month I can take pills normally. It's not bad at all honestly.

some of my stuff he ordered it switched to liquid form, and crush them and put them in a spoon of pudding. They go down easier that way.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
