How am I supposed to feel

Recommended Posts

Ok veteran banders,

I have been banded for 2 weeks today. I still have no hunger; I haven’t had any hunger since surgery is this normal? I’m not sure how I’m supposed to feel or how much I should be eating. I do eat .04 oz of full liquids 3 times a day and I make sure have my 64oz of Clear Liquids but I don’t have the sensation of being full because I’m not hungry to start with. I meet with the nutritionist tomorrow to advance my diet but I just wanted to run things by you guys first. I can’t imagine getting a fill right now since I’m 24.4 lbs down and not hungry at all. Not complaining just making sure I'm on the right track.

What your experiencing is totally normal. You probably have swelling from the surgery. I find that since banded I don't have the same full feeling. It's more of a feeling of not being hungry anymore. Congrats on your surgery!

Definitely normal! You may still have swelling from surgery or maybe the band has given you the restriction level you need (ie. you don't need any fills). Only time will tell. Congrats on your loss so far. :)

As long as you're not hungry, you don't need a fill. Some people never need one. Others, once the swelling goes down from surgery, do. Just consider yourself fortunate, because you're on your way!

My surgeon says that most people regain their hunger at around 3 weeks post-op. That is about how long it takes for the swelling to go down and the fat pad around the band to reduce. As of today, I am 16 weeks post-op and still have not regained hunger. I think it is great and hope it continues. I have wondered why this is and I think it is just that the surgeon placed the band in a very good spot :) Good luck on your journey!

I think my actual hunger came back around week 3. My head hunger came back sooner though. I'm 3 months post op though and haven't had a fill yet. I'm comfortable with where I am at

I can count on one hand how many times I have been hungry since surgery. I feel really lucky that I don't have to fight with hunger. I know it is a huge struggle for others. Consider yourself lucky too! rolleyes.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
