Birinak 19 Posted March 20, 2011 My nutritional plan states that during my 3rd week post-op I can start having vegetables, but to stay away from fibrous veggies. Which ones are fibrous? I know asparagus is......what else? Celery, (can be eaten, in the normal solid food phase, if cut into very tiny pieces and chewed well) Bok choy (very difficult unless cooked until very soft and cut up. Even just cutting it up is difficult which shows how hard it would be to chew into small bits), Broccoli, Lettuce (except iceberg lettuce which is very watery and easy to chew; think more along the lines of dark green lettuces (like romaine lettuce, which I'm actually trying to eat right now but it's taking a long time and is uncomfortable)), Artichoke Bell peppers (Not difficult at all for me if cooked or eaten raw in small pieces) Turnips Radishes Anyhow, you're still post-op, so it doesn't matter whether you could actually get away with eating them. Ignore my suggestions of how to eat fibour veggies, until you're clear to eat all solid foods. Each time you try a new food, no matter how easy they are to eat for another person, remember to eat slowly and take a small test bite, waiting a few minutes first to see how it's going down. Every person has specific foods that they can't tolerate, which may differ for other people. Finally, remember that the band is usually tight in the morning or after a long period of not eating, so don't eat any fibrous veggies then.
Sarabi 0 Posted March 20, 2011 Thank you so much. I'm bummed about Broccoli. I was hoping to put some in my cheddar cheese Soup, Oh well, it will just have to wait. Again, thank you so much for the information.
TexasNurseMom 5 Posted March 20, 2011 I can eat brocolli as long as it us cooked and soft. Canned asparagus while not nearly astasty as fresh is ok for mr too since it is kinda mushy. salad even darker lettuce is ok for me too. But raw carrots, celery or broccoli cause me issues. Cucumber and Tomato are ok. Corn is a huge no for me. A lot of it varies from person to person.
topazz 4 Posted March 20, 2011 I eat broccoli, peppers and lettuce without a problem. I cook the peppers and broccoli so tey are soft. But I have no trouble with lettuce. I eat either romaine or iceberg. When you start out, just take little bites and chew very well.

The OP shouldn't eat fibrous veggies until they're cleared to by their surgeon. I can eat all of those veggies when they're cooked, and most of them raw. I can't eat raw broccoli (or I'd have to be extra careful). Anyway, it really changes from person to person and also how tight your band is.
mahealanij 0 Posted March 21, 2011 Im not sure about all the other vegetables but asparagus kicked my rear!!! Almost ended up in the ER because the pain was so intense..
Jachut 487 Posted March 22, 2011 cooked and soft in Soup broccoli should be fine. Raw carrots are a killer for me.
AngelaL 0 Posted March 22, 2011 Another one to watch out for is brussel sprouts. Just yesterday I had the WORST experience with them - and I am still paying for it today. I had roasted them for almost 20 mins in the oven, but they were still too hard in the middle. i had the worst "stuck" episode that I have EVER had! It went on for almost 2 hours Today my throat was sore all morning. I had a Protein shake for Breakfast, and then lunch attempted to eat chicken that had been made in the crockpot and was really soft and it happened again... UGH. I called my Drs office nd I am now on liquids for 2 days, then mushies, then soft foods - the same as if I had a fill. The NP said that after I go through the cycle the welling should be gone and I could go back to normal eating.
thejaketucker 1 Posted March 22, 2011 Be careful with raw veggies. I ate a ton of salads before surgery (preop weight loss) and now i can't eat any (lettuce makes me very sick) I am about 2.5 months out. Hopefully it changes some day, i miss salad. Cooked Beans have gone down easy as well as cooked spinach. I would stay away from chickpeas (even cooked) for a while, they made me sick too
AngryBaby 2 Posted March 22, 2011 I can't eat veggies raw. I absolutely love broccoli yet I have difficulties eating it. The only way I can eat it is when it is steamed and with no stems. Only broccoli floretts for me!!
HeatherinCA 10 Posted March 22, 2011 My general rule of thumb during that time was thinking about how hard any food would be to digest... veggies are hard, don't chew up well, I can imagine it would be harder to digest ya know? Same with things like steak or any tough meat.< /p>
Saraboo 21 Posted March 22, 2011 For me, it's corn, and peas that give me the biggest issues cooked. Lettuce is now a no for me, which sucks because I LOVE salad, and I can only do celery if it's been peeled. Suprisingly, I don't have too many issues with asparagus, and it's become my new favorite veggie. And I've done broccoli in Soup, and it goes down fine. Yummm. Lol.
