CAROLYNFC 24 Posted March 19, 2011 I was banded on 3/14/2011. My doctor told me not to take my Maxide blood pressure meds for two weeks. Had to take my daughter to our family doctor on Friday and he was unhappy to hear they told me not to take my meds. Long story short Blood pressure is rising and I am having Fluid retention problems. I am following evrything to a T and don't feel like I am losing enough weight. Anyone else have this problem.
Lady_Dragyn 2 Posted March 19, 2011 I still take the Fluid pill (because I felt like I was holding fluid), but came off the atenelol immediately after surgery. My BP is the best it's been in years Good luck.
bigtom1948 8 Posted March 20, 2011 I spoke to both my primary care physician and my cardiologist and they advised in my situation to wait and see if the blood pressure drops before discarding any meds. The cardiologist said that because of my history I will still need to stay on beta blockers and cholesterol drugs even after and if indicator levels drop but that the dosages would be dropped significantly. Your surgeon doesn't mean you any harm but does not know your history like your primary care physician and/or cardiologist. It seems wise to keep them in the loop and follow thier advice in weening off medications.
Cocoabean 430 Posted March 21, 2011 Your primary care doctor and surgeon can discuss it. My surgeon took me off BP meds right before my surgery. I haven't needed them since, but I monitor it regularly. You might need to go back on it until you have lost more weight.

ElfiePoo 109 Posted March 22, 2011 I just read something recently that said gastric bypass patients are able to go off all their meds *usually* the first month after surgery but it has something to do with the malabsorption and the fact that their bodies are no longer processing foods normally. That's not true of banders. Perhaps these surgeons are just using the same protocol without reasoning through it. Then again, I know little of blood pressure problems since I've never had any so perhaps it's different and resolves more quickly than diabetes (which took about a year to get to the point where I was diet controlled). .
