How much weight have you lost? I am tired of this question!

Recommended Posts

OMG, ever since I had the surgery, everyone wants to know how much weight I've lost. Not how I'm doing, not how school is going (I started gradute school a month ago), BUT how much weight have you lost!!!

If I had lost a lot of weight I probably wouldn't be so bothered by the question, but really. And I think it's just RUDE to ask someone that every week. Gosh.

Oh I hear ya! I get tired of that question to. Especially when its the same people asking over and over. And I almost feel guilty if I dont have a large number to report. I was banded Oct 29 and have lost 55 lbs but I feel like people think I should be 100 lbs down already. I just dont think they get it. 

I know how you feel..I used to get so annoyed when people kept asking..I started to wish i didnt even tell anyone about the surgery..I felt like I kept telling them the same weight over and over which just led to be getting more frustrated...especially while I was in "bandster hell"...but now that I am 7months out and have lost almost 60lbs I dont mind it as much...like you said in your post. ...in fact Iv learned to be pretty proud of what I worked so hard to accomplish cause like Im sure you know its not as easy as people think.

I hear ya, it grates on your nerves sometimes. I think by asking people are trying to be supportive, but it gets old.

Maybe change the subject like the southern gal in another thread explained so well. Say something like "Now, you don't really want to hear about my weight every time we see each other. How is your mother doing?" Maybe say. "Oh school is keeping me so busy I didn't even think to weigh today. I'm so happy I started grad school!" Or just say "I'm not focusing on the numbers." Or maybe you could come up with something witty that would let them know it's annoying without hurting their feelings.

Let me tell you, when you lost a lot, it gets even worse. I've stopped telling most people how much I've lost. I hate that look on their face while their adding up the numbers and figuring out how much I used to weigh!

Or, you could say "Guess" and see them stumble around and not know what to say! That might shut them up unless they're really trying to be bitchy and they say something small like 15 pounds or something. At least you'll know if they're trying to hurt your feelings or just being insensitive.

Personally- I am very proud of the weight I have lost and don't mind the question. However, if I did I would probably say- I don't weigh myself, but I am feeling great. If that's all you give them they will probably stop asking. Just a thought- best wishes.

I cringe when my mother asks, "have you lost any more weight" cause it is usually followed by "is that all". l avoid telling her the over all weight loss because then i get "OMG were you that heavy / fat". My sister has lost 60 kgs after gastric bypass surgery and the other day she said to me, "dont worry, people will start to notice when you have lost 20 to 30 kgs". I have lost 28kgs(61lbs) and everyone at work comments about how good i am looking.

People are insensitive, even those who should know better. When people ask how much i have lost i tend to say "it fluctuates, loose some gain some, but it is slowly coming off". This avoids giving them a number and tends to let them know i am uncomfortable with the question.

Keep up the good work and remember we are supposed to loose slowly, i keep telling myself i have been at this for 6 months and the statistics say After two years most people will have lost 60 % of their excess weight. Slow and steady will win us the race. My goal is to feel better and be able to join in life instead of watching it from the side line. If that means a smaller dress size (or 2 or 3 or 4) along the way, well really that is a bonus. Oh and i really want to be able go places without stressing if i will fit in the seats or can put the tray down.

It doesn't really bother me. I see people who don't know I've had surgery, and they say 'you've lost a lot of weight.' I laugh and say a little bit. They usually don't say anything else after that expecet that I look good or they ask how I did it. I don't tell them I had surgery. I just kinda tell them I started eating less, etc.

I like when people ask because it makes me think "well, at least they noticed." I don't see myself as 'skinny' when I look in the mirror or at pictures so it makes me feel good when people ask :).

Your post kind of irritates me and possibly we are here for different reasons. I believe in joining this community we come together as a group of people who have undergone the necessary hardships to reach a goal. WEIGHT LOSS! We've had surgery to make that possible. We have a group of people who may understand all or some of the challenges we have had and do face in reaching this endevor. It all boils down to that very question... how much weight HAVE you lost. Why or why not? Let's figure it out. We have a wonderful group of people who we can discuss our issues with, and who support one another with every aspect of acheiving that. My Facebook friends... they know about my life. My Lap Band friends... they are the one's, maybe the only one's I am honestly making an accounting to about MY WEIGHT!

If you're stalled, talk about it, the reasons why. That's what we're all here for, to help one another be successful LOSING WEIGHT!!!

Good Luck!

Bren

I don't understand what you're saying irritates you. If you thought the OP was talking about people here on the board maybe I understand your post. But I believe she was talking about people in real life. To me it's tantamount to asking how much you weight when someone in person asks how much you've lost. On here, yes, I expect people to ask and talk about how much we've lost. We wouldn't be here otherwise. But in real life, it can be kind of rude if you ask me.

Agreed, in real life it can be uncomfortable. On here... it makes sense.

Thanks, Rainydayz. I was confused by the post, also.

Bren, yes, I am referring to other people in my life.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
