How much weight have you lost? I am tired of this question!

Recommended Posts

I guess in some cases you could turn it around and say, "how much do you weigh?" That might make the little light bulb come on. Maybe some people would realize that it is making you feel like they are asking a rude question.

Since this whole process began that is all anyone sems to ask me. It is getting a little weird, but I think that is just because I have avoided any conversation regarding my weight nearly my whole life.Talking about it, even if it is about loss, still makes me a little uncomfortable. Only a few people on my team at work know I was banded, everyone else just thinks I went on vacation and dropped a few pounds. I think it is just natural for people who like and support you to ask how you are losing weight because it may be thier way of cheering you on. I know they mean well, but it doesnt make it any easier.

When someone asks me how much i have lost i tell them a whole long story about my surgery and my preop loss. By the time im done explaining my weight loss they usually dont want to hear more. Most of them dont ask again. lol

I can understand your annoyance. I think in my case, however, I get a bit frustrated about the question only because I thought I would've lost more by now that I have. I've never really been a numbers person when it comes to my weight until now (more concerned about size) as I've always weighed more than people my same size. I've become more focused on my NSV's, like being able to sit comfortably in a seat on the plane and not be squished or being able to keep up with my thin sister who speed walks everywhere without needing to whip out my inhalor (lol). I think most people mean well when they ask, but yes, there are always those few who are just there to try to steal your sunshine. I think as long as we remember this is a journey we are doing for ourselves and not others we will be just fine. Good luck to you all!:D

If it is prefaced with a statement of you look great, I have no problem saying how much I have lost. Or if it is someone I haven't seen in a while I have no prob with it either. But, people I work with, family and others I see on a daily basis, do irritate me when they ask. Especially if I haven't lost in a few days. They look so disappointed in mr if I don't lose each time they see me.

My wonderful housekeeper comes up to me every day when she arrives at work - throws her arms around my (once) corpulent waist and then gets my nephew to measure the distance between her hands to see how much more to go before her hands touch

Nearly there Boss she says with her cheeky smile

Get longer arms I keep saying to her. Maybe the Doctor can elastic band my arms she says before going off to get my oatmeal, Protein powder and daily banana

Im not let eat anything even remotely bad - she watches me like an overprotective mother hawk

(Dont tell her we are going out for pizza tonite - even if it is only salad bar for me)

Regards from Yogyakarta Indonesia

OMG, ever since I had the surgery, everyone wants to know how much weight I've lost. Not how I'm doing, not how school is going (I started gradute school a month ago), BUT how much weight have you lost!!!

If I had lost a lot of weight I probably wouldn't be so bothered by the question, but really. And I think it's just RUDE to ask someone that every week. Gosh.

I agree! People ask me this every week also, I stopped weighing myself unless I had a doctors appointment becasue I was tired of the scales not moving as fast as I thougt they should. I wish I had measured myself becasue I have also lost inches. I just tell people, "I have know idea how much I have lost, but I feel great" Thank god no one ever asked me how much I gained before surgery. Good luck with grad school, I also am trying to finish Graduate school.

I know how you feel..I used to get so annoyed when people kept asking..I started to wish i didnt even tell anyone about the surgery..I felt like I kept telling them the same weight over and over which just led to be getting more frustrated...especially while I was in "bandster hell"...but now that I am 7months out and have lost almost 60lbs I dont mind it as much...like you said in your post. ...in fact Iv learned to be pretty proud of what I worked so hard to accomplish cause like Im sure you know its not as easy as people think.

good for you nicole on losing so much weight...I was just banded on march 18 and I couldnt and didnt tell everyone i was doing this for a kidney problem I have had for yars now and if I had everyone in my buisness about weight loss Id want to kill myself..so very few close family members know and I think Im ok with that..see I had a large hernia too so I played that was the operation I was having and I ve bbeen on a diet for 2 months so noone asks questions..good luck and conyinue your weight loss journey

When people at work ask, I say "don't know, don't care, as long as my health keeps improving". That (I hope) gives them a clear message of what is important. The problem I have is with my mother and my adult son. They are both the vainest virgos I know, and nothing is more important to them than being in perfect physical appearance. They hound me relentlessly. To them, a one pound loss is failure. Then just today my dad stopped by, and he said "are you still losing anything? are you sure you're eating the right stuff?" Last week my sister (also a vain virgo) told me how much she's lost on her new diet, then asked me how much I've lost like it's a contest. When I told her, she said "at least I'm doing it on my own". Actually, I think it is a contest to her because she started her diet on my surgery day. She told the girls she works with that her sister had lap band surgery (none of their business in my book) and there's no way she's letting me get skinnier than her. So while neighbors and people at work annoy me, my family is downright hurtful.

Your family is brutal! I am soooo glad I'm not one of those Virgos. I guess this is why I decided to keep me having surgery to myself, so no one could make stupid comments, tell other people, or ask me dumb questions. Especially my family! This makes me wonder what else are people going to have to say once I'm at a normal weight.

I enjoy the question, I'm proud of my losses, don't mind it at all, and when all finished I will have lost over 300 lbs. Be proud, I'm glad they notice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
