EXERCISE TYPES

i am planning on spending the day outside if I can it is beautiful and I want to be out in it. i will be pulling weeds probably most of the day. is that considered exercise ?????

I was wondering what types of exercise everyone does after surgery. i love to walk and and dance.

absolutely it is exercise. Lap band Journey (or Fit day) has a place you can enter your activity/exercise. I just typed in pulling weeds, 1 hour will burn 364 calories!!! Anyway you look at it, it is all about calories in vs. calories out so any activity is good! I wish the snow would go away and I could get into my flower beds... that won't be till at least May tho..... Enjoy your day!

Anything you do that is moving your body is exercise in my book. Parking far away from the store and walking the parking lot is better than parking up close.smile.gif I don't do any type of formal exercise or "working out." I am not saying that is the proper way to do things, but It's the way I do. I have been more active since being banded and think it helps. I do things like going bowling. I didn't like bowling as much before I dropped a large amount of weight just because I felt like everyone was viewing my big a$stongue.gif I would love to get back into dancing! That is what I was doing when I met my DH so many years ago.bananapowerslide.gif

Last summer after being banded we went fishing often. fish2.gifThere are not many calories being burned while fishing, but it sure is better that being a couch potatoebehindsofa.gif

i don't do formal dancing i just play the music and dance like no one is watching. if some one is here i go to my room and do it just like i did when i was a teenager.

My brother-in-law was the lead singer in a band. My girlfriends and I would go to hear the band play and dance. We would dance with any guy that would ask. I was very thin then. It was so much fun! I'm sure all the dancing helped me stay thin. I guess I could say my husband and I fell in love on the dance floor. The band used to joke around about us being "couple number one" because we would be the first ones to get out there and start the dancing.

It depends where you're starting out from. I started at a point where I wouldnt have really called gardening "exercise", even though its active, becuase it was pretty easy for me, I could already run and do stuff like that. But if you're starting from a point where pulling weeds makes you breathless and sweaty, then that's great exercise for YOU.

I think no matter what it is, intensity is the key. If you dont puff and sweat then its really not very effective. You need to push yourself to improve and to lose fat. Exercise for weight loss really probably involves a change of clothes and a shower!

It took me lots of hard core cardio to lose 130lb - running mainly, but boot camp also and nowadays I run and do Body Pump. I tried for an hour of pretty vigorous exercise a day, once I'd built up reasonable fitness, I certainly couldnt do that at first.

Hi

I'm 8 days post-op. I went for a 25 minute walk day 3 and felt fine, and by day 5 I was on my bike (indoor trainer) for about 25 minutes. I've been between 35-55 minutes/day each day since with a heart rate range of 135-165 (typically in the middle) and I feel great. I was considering elliptical but in the past I've actually found them to be intensive on the abs (relatively speaking) so I'm sticking to the bike until my 3 week post op appt and hopefully I'll have the green light to increase the exercise routine to stairmaster, elliptical, etc.

I haven't been banded yet but I currently do an hour of Jazzercise a few times a week and this will be my main workout post banding as well. I LOVE it. I am also a super busy mom so I rarely just sit.

I'm not sure yet. I have an appointment with a hormone doctor in about a month and from there we will decide when to do the banding. I hope within the next three months though.

I like to think of activites such as working outdoors, cleaning, walking, etc. as part of an active lifestyle. It burns calories but may not be of sufficient intensity to be considered dedicated exercise. There just is no substitute for dedicated exercise.

I have been a couch potato, only walking a little here and there. My weight plateaued. I have just recently started using my clubhouse workout facility and in a week I dropped four pounds. I suppose I'm going to have to listen to common reason and work out.

My big thing is conquering the elliptical machine. Today I should be up to 20 minutes at level one. When I get to 30, which I think will take a couple of weeks, I will go to level two. I am doing it slowly so I don't kill myself or get bored. I mix up my workout by doing the nautilus machines (rower, leg press, chest press) and have 5lb weights for my arms at home.

I used to be a treadmill fan, especially because at my top weight it was all I could do. Tried three minutes on the elliptical and about fainted. Now I am finding the elliptical almost- I can't believe I am saying this- FUN and I really like how my knees and ankles aren't getting pounded!

Good luck finding YOUR fun workout. I didn't believe it was possible, but for me, it is! :D

Good for you! There is no substitute to sufficient exercise - it is vital to long term success! Just add intensity and variation as you get stronger and your body adjusts.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
