Am I drinking to much Water

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 2/23/11..I have a medical condition called Psuedotumor Cerebri, and I am taking a direutic for this disease. However, I am always thirsty and I cant seem to just sip Water, It seems that I am guzzling the water down. I know this is not the right approach if I do not want my band to stretch. However, I havent had my first fill yet and I do not feel any restrictions. I can eat and drink almost anything I want. Can someone please share their experiences with diuretics and these screaming hunger pangs...

I drink 80 ounces of Water a day. I was banded 12/9 and haven't had a fill yet. I can guzzle too. I don't think there is any harm so long as your post op swelling has gone down.

By the way, did you see the recent post in pseudotumor celebri? If you didn't, do a search. You may find some other bandsters with this condition and could give/get some support.

Best wishes to you.

Are you eating with meals or immediately after? If not you should be fine.

I'm not sure if there is a contraindication of drinking a lot if you are taking a diuretic, I know you probably want to drink more to not get dehydrated but then I don't know if to much would counteract it's effects, I'd check with your dr. On that. Me, I aim for at least 128 oz a day. Yeah I drink a lot.

liquids tend to go right through the band without trouble. As long as you are following your doctor's orders about not drinking around mealtimes, it should not be a problem. Do you get pain when you drink? If not, then I'd not be concerned. After you get fills you might have to slow it down just a touch if it causes discomfort. I can easily drink a half-liter bottle of Water without stopping on an empty stomach. If I have just eaten and try to drink that quickly, I risk bringing everything back up.

I think of it like a funnel, if you pour in a lot of liquid, it will back up somewhat, but continue to go down. The tighter your band, the slower it will drain. The thinner the liquid, the faster it will drain. The ticker the liquid, the slower it drains.

I've been banded over three years and have good restriction.

Of course, talk if over with your doctor, but I believe you should be able to drink enough to quench your thirst without damaging your band.

From what I've been told, this is excellent advice. Seek your Doc's advice......

I hate typos! The "thicker" liquid! Rats! :-)

Sorry about that.

Thanks for all of your responses, it helps me with the fear of drinking too much. I was at a support group and the leader told me to sip only a mouthful every 1-2 minutes or else I will strecth my band. Now I know I can guzzle if Im thirsty enough to guzzle, especially since I do not have a fill yet. Also thanks for giving me the advice on searching for my disease so that I could get some support for those bandsters..RELIEVED....rolleyes.gif

Did she truly say "stretch the band"? I ask because the band itself cannot be stretched. The outer part of it is hard. Or did she say stretch the pouch above the band? My confidence in a group leader would be sorely shaken if she told you the device itself could be stretched.

My understanding of stretching the pouch is that it is not as easy as just drinking Water. Water being liquid will go down much quicker than the time needed to cause damage. To stretch the pouch takes overeating for quite some time.

Unlike bypass patients, our pouches retain the ability to grind. Bypass depends on gravity to empty the pouch, band patients' stomachs still use muscle action to empty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
