Lap Band Surgery In Shanghai??

Recommended Posts

Hi hi!

I've been thinking about doing this for years and now I'm determined to have the surgery. I've been 100+lbs overwright almost my entire life (the weight started to pack on around 8 years old) and no amount of exercise has ever helped. I have always been active, on dozens of sports teams, and i have always been the biggest person on those teams - basketball, swimming, rock-climbing, badminton, baseball, you name it. I lost a bit of weight when I came to Shanghai 8 years ago just because of severe habit changes but it all came back gradually - without me having done much to change those habits and I am back at my original weight. Never seems to go higher thank god, but I hate 255 being my 'minimum'.

Anyway, I live in Shanghai and there are some pretty decent medical facilities here but what kind of questions should I be asking my prospective surgeon? There are 2 hospitals I'm looking at (one with Western doctors, one with Western-trained) and I want to make an appointment to talk with the surgeon.

Can you guys give me some suggestions about what I should ask? I'd appreciate any and all ideas.

Thank you!

NOT TO BE RUED AT ALL ! O.K. Just make sure the band is not made there.

I would check the manufacturers site for a list of doctors. Some have additional training on a particular brand Allergen or Johnson & Johnson and that is noted on their websites. Take a look on Yahoo Groups and see if there one for people who live in Shanghai who have been banded.

Hmmm there are good hospitals in Shanghai? I have a friend who lives there but travels to Korea to see the same doc I go to because she says all the hospitals there are shit (she even tried a doc in CHina who did more bad then good to her band and she needed it replaced).

Look up the user name p-body. She might be able to give you more insight.

Have you met anyone banded by these doctors?

You know,, this lap band site is all over the world "I THINK !" I would plug for something like chinalapband.com and see if it comes up or gives you a alternative. If you don't read Chinese fluently, then click on your interpreter on your computer.

I think I would start with that, and look up lapband even on youtube if it's just data that you want, and call them, and see if they supply china with the Band. The other is the realizs band by Johnson & Johnson.

Good Luck on your hunt.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
