Hello all,

I went in for my surgical consult on Thur 3/10 and my doctor seem to be pushing the Gastric Bypass more than the band. I am more inclined to go with the band. The idea of having my insides switched around and cut away is very frightening to me. I want to lose 100 pounds and he kept saying that for that amount I should go with the Gastric and not the band. Has anyone else had their doctor push for this? Did you go with the band and get the results you wanted? I just cant wrap my head around having the Gastric it seems so drastic and end of the line kind of thing.

I understand completely. When I went in for my consult my surgeon was pushing me toward the gastric sleeve. He said the band was typically not as successful if you have 100 or more pounds to lose, etc. I left the consult confused and a little upset, but at the same time I appreciated the honesty from him. That being said, I knew I didn't want anything right now as drastic as the sleeve or bypass, so I am now on the schedule for a lap band to be done on Monday, April 4th. I have seen so many success stories on this forum the past few weeks that I have been lurking. So I know if I put forth the effort with changing my eating habits and execrcise, I can be successful too. It won't be an overnight fix but I know I can do it.

Thats how I feel. I know its not a maginc pill and that I will have to put forth the effort and be committed. I just need a little help and I feel that the band is it.

I agree with TMW41, I've been on the forum the past couple of weeks and am so inspired by the success stories I've seen. I'm due to have my surgery sometime in April, just need to get one last clearance at the end of March. Best of luck to you all!! I'm so excited for us all!

Hey there! I was banded on 3-7-11. I have researched all forms and ultimately the band was for me. I would however strongly caution you against bypass. Everything I've read and talked to my doctor about say that it is for extreme cases only. There is no going back after bypass. If you are unsure about the band, I would recommend that you research the sleeve. It is middle ground. Doesnt have the absorption problems like bypass but is a little more drastic than the band. I only had about 70 pounds to lose so I was more comfortable with the band myself. Do the research online before you let your doctor push you into a procedure you're not comfortable with. Best of luck to you!

My .02...I think the underlying reason so many doctors try to steer people away from the band and into bypass is that they believe the person will not make any changes in their eating and will fail at the band. The reality is that the same will happen with bypass. There's a honeymoon period where you'll drop a lot of weight, but if you haven't learned to control what you eat and how much you eat, you'll put it all back on.

.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
