Being Banded on April 5th

Recommended Posts

My name is Karrie. I am new to this forum. Very excited to be getting the lap band. It has been a long road to admitting I needed help. Because of my BMI I have to be on the 30 day pre-op Protein diet. I have to say the Bariatric Advantage shakes are horrible. But I keep on truckin along with them because I know in the end it will be so worth the nasty taste. I have already dropped 10lbs. I have 3 wonderful children that I am doing this for. I want to be around for them for as long as I can. My mother left this earth too early because of her weight and health issues. I refuse to do that. I am tired of being the "fat" mom!!!

Just wanted to say welcome and congrats on deciding to be banded. Are you able to use any other type of Protein shake? If so you may want to stop around.

Good luck!

What flavors of shakes do you have? I had to be on Bariatric Advantage before my surgery also. strawberry is my favorite, don't mind drinking it at all. I also bought chocolate. Drinkable, but now after surgery I find it way too thick. I was told I could blend them with milk, ice & Sugar Free Chocolate Syrup to make it more of a smoothy. Also, the colder the better and more you shake the thicker they get.

Good luck and welcome to the band club!

I have a bag of each flavor. Yes, the strawberry is the most tolerable one for me also. I can handle the vanilla if i put frozen berries in it and make a smoothy. The chocolate though is tough for me. I gag everytime. LOL But I give myself a pep talk before and I get it down. My surgeon wants me to make them with Water for now. He said after the surgery I can mix with milk. Thanks for the ideas and the support!!

I have to stay on the Bariatric Advantage until my surgery, after that I can choose my own. I have been supplementing a lil because i have been trying different ones. That way I know what I like after. The EAS ones seem to be the best for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
