12 days since banding...

Recommended Posts

I was banded on March 2 and it has been pretty rough. I realized I am really was addicted to food and I felt as if i was going through with draw! However, in a few short days I will be allowed to eat something again. I am nervous about what I can eat, but I need to chew something soon! Any ideas... I really want moo sho chicken, but I am not sure if that is going to be alright. Its all I could think about for two weeks??

Any ideas?

Not sure Chinese food should be on your lists of to eat anytime soon, but I guess what works for you.

I totally understand! For the first 2 weeks all I could think about was spaghetti. Of course, I'm over 3 weeks out now and i haven't had it yet. Once you start actually eating food again, you'll be surprised at how little you want and how satisfied you'll be with bland things for now. Stick with your doctors prescribed diet while your tummy is healing. You'll be able to have eggs, Beans, cottage cheese, hot cereals, chicken salad, tuna salad. I know they don't sound like that great food from your favorite restaurant, but again, you'll be so surprised at how satisfying they really are after not having REAL food for soooo long. I felt really confident last week when they said I could have eggs, so I tried it and it got stuck. That was an incredibly painful 4 hours I spent waiting for it to pass. So be cautious when starting with the solids. Go easy at first, don't make the same mistake I did!

I would stay away from mooshoo- it's cooked in all kinds of oil and the pancakes are full of carbs. I would save it for when your maintaining, then you can have it once in a while. That's the kind of thing that worked for me anyway. You need to find an eating plan that works for you. I chose to stay away from all high fat, high sugar foods while I was loosing, just what worked for me. Good luck and congrats on your surgery!

I was also banded on March 2nd. I am struggling with the whole what can I eat thing. liquids no longer satisfy me and I am going to try cottage cheese, pudding and cream Soups. I made the mistake yesterday of trying some scrambled eggs with about a 1/2 cup of hashbrowns, because my stomach was growling. BAD idea! I have been in agony with left sided shoulder pain ever since. So, I'm going to try going a little softer. I know what you mean about the food addiction. The head hunger is far worse than the physical hunger. My personal email is jbuntjer@hotmail.com. Feel free to email me it would be nice to have someone to share this with since we started our journey on the same day.

It will get better, but there will always be temptation. I am 5 weeks out and on all regular foods minus breads, pastas and those kinds of things. I am surprised though at how easily I get satisfied and lose interest in foods I used to love. Had steak this weekend and after 5 or 6 bites I really just didn't want anymore. In the past I would have cleaned my plate! So try to hang in there. I would chew ice which I know is bad for your teeth, but it helped in the first couple weeks when I wanted to chew something. Hang in there v

Thank you everyone.. tomorrow is the big day! I am surprised to hear a few people becoming sick on eggs. as you were eatting did the pain start or hours later?? I am not going to consume any carbs or sugars, like the wrap the moo shu goes in, but just eat the inside. The chicken is very tender and I can have it steamed with the sauce on the side. I am just worried about the veggies in it ?

Yay!! Congratulations!!! Recoginzing you have an addiction to food isn't like recognizing you're an alcoholic. You don't get to quit eating forever. What I am doing to manage this is 1st, setting out menu's. I've never been a menu person in my life. But recognizing that if it's planned it's less likely to temp you is important.

I wrote a blog about 'chew bags'. I dunno, maybe that might be a suggestion to try as well.

I'm having trouble with the full liquid diet. Everything seems to get stuck. Yogurt, Soup, anything with consistency beyond Water. It can be frustrating and painful. So my plan is to literally go for 1 bite at a time. They say make your meals last 1/2 hour. How would you make 1/4 cup of Soup last 1/2 hour? I guess if I take a bite and wait 10 minutes that would work. After being stuck I don't tend to WANT anything anyway. It's a whole new ballgame and one we don't want to screw up.

Keep working on it!!

Bren

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
