Antibiotics burning stomach. Ouch!!!

Recommended Posts

I started taking Doxycycline for acne a few months ago. My dermatologist originally suggested I take it with food and in doing so, I had no trouble with taking it. However, as time went by, my stomach and esophagus started burning, even with food...kinda like I had swallowed...oh, what is that minty stuff you rub on sore muscles?...Icy Hot or Biofreeze. The burn only happened when I took the Doxycycline originally. Now, the burning happens sometimes when I eat, no matter the food.

What I believe has happened is that the Doxycycline very slowly irritated my stomach until, even with food, the dose caused the burning. Last week, the burning was so bad that I even considered the ER! :( I have an appointment with my surgeon next week (wish it were sooner) and my guess is that I'll end up with an Endoscopy. I also have an appointment with my dermatologist, so I hope we can get this figured out.

So, long story short...anyone else had this kind of problem???

Thanks everyone!

Kelley

I've never taken doxycycline, but I work with animals and I know in animals it has to be taken with food and especially in cats followed with Water to wash it down because it can cause esophageal strictures and maybe erosions. Not sure if it applies to your case, but since your dr suggested you take it with food, I assume the same is true with people.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
