surgery date nearing...nerves starting to set in!

Recommended Posts

My band date is the 23rd of March and my nerves are starting to get to me!

When I 1st received my band date I was so happy but as the days go by I'm becoming a little scared. Even though I haven't told too many people about the surgery I don't really know if I can talk to them about my fear. So I want to hear those who've had the surgery to kinda talk me of the ledge {so to speak}lol...

It wasn't bad at all. I was sore for a few days and since then I've been doing really well. It is stressful and scarey no matter what you do, but just keep the end result in mind and find a friend or family member you can talk to and that can support you and then this forum seems very awesome! (I'm brand new too, and was just banded on 3/4). Good luck and keep your chin up!

Congraulations on your banding...my thing is I've never had surgery or been put under befoe! Were you in any discomfort when you woke up or when you go to sleep? I understand everyones pain levels are different

I'm getting banded the day after you, so I don't have any post op info. However, I can tell you I was getting really nervous up until I began my 2 week pre op diet. My diet is all liquids and is so brutal that I am now looking forward to surgery just to be done with this portion of the diet. Do you have this to look forward to as well? Surgery is always scary but honestly, if we don't lose this extra weight, the time spent in hospitals and possible surgeries will be much worse for us. I wish you the best with your banding! You can do it and you'll do great! :welldoneclap:

Other than having my wisdom teeth out when I was a teenager, I had never had any sort of surgery either. I am, however, very familiar with the process and procedures as I worked in the medical field for a few years in a hospital on a pre/post op floor. Also both of my parents have had many surgeries. I was nervous and concerned of course, but my knowledge made it much less stressful for me, I think. I also had my Mom there with me and that was the best thing for me. She is a HUGE support and I think that is a very important part of the process. Find that one person who you can lean on and do it. The entire program I went through was amazing as well. The staff at the center is outstanding and I can't say enough about them.

As for discomfort, I had some discomfort right when I woke up. I'd say a 5 or a 6 on a 10 scale. Yes pain is different for everyone. I took I think 4 or 5 Oxycodone over the following few days and haven't taken any since except for when I pulled a stitch on my left side, that hurt! Still aren't sure what I did to do it, but I'm a big girl the danged couch is low blah blah blah...anyway, that resolved in a few days too. I still have a little discomfort, primarily on my left side if I stretch too far or if I try to role over on that side at night or something. No lifting for 6 weeks, so no issues there. And again, my Mom has been a huge help and my neice (she's 18 and lives with me) has been a pretty big support and help around here too. But I'm doing the basic housekeeping, dishes, laundry, dog/cat duties without any issues. Took 4 or 5 days before I could bend over to get things off the floor and it's still tight to do so almost 11 days out, but I do it without any actual pain if I'm careful. My first sneeze was interesting lol. Overall, it's nothing like I was expecting and have been pleasantly suprised.

The going to sleep thing is still funny to me. They wheeled me down the hall into the OR and I was laying there talking to the anesthetists and my surgeon and have no recollection of going to sleep...literally I was having a conversation and then I was waking up having the same conversation, just way more groggy. lol There is a little burning feeling when the sleepy meds go in through the IV, but it was hardly noticable.

I hope this helps put you at ease a little bit. Best of luck to you :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
