I was told when my endoscopy was done that I have a medium sized hiatal hernia. The doc said I should still be OK for the band...but now I'm worried....

I was wondering if anyone else was told they have a medium sized hiatal hernia before their surgery (banding) and was there any complications or problems with still getting the band? I'm worried that I may be told I can only go gastric...I'm not opposed to gastric I just feel that the band is what is the best option for me...

Just wondering if anyone else had dealt with something similiar?

Hi,

I had a hernia and I didn't even know I had one until I had my band done. I also had to have my gallbladder out as well but they did that surgery one month before I had the band done. All is well and you will do fine. If you have any questions just ask.

Good luck to you

I had both a hiatal hernia and a ventral hernia repaired during my band surgery. Nobody said anything about hernia size, but the surgeon downplayed the hiatal hernia, saying, "Oh, we'll just take care of that when you're on the table." Sounded like he wasn't at all concerned. You should probably call and ask your surgeon, but I gather these kinds of hernias are routine enough that you should be just fine.

Good luck!

Dave

I didn't have the hiatal hernia, but I remember my surgeon discussing that if I had one that he would repair it during my surgery. I would talk to your surgeon about it and ask if he's going to repair it. Also, if you're going through insurance for your surgery and have a hiatal hernia, I believe they are more lenient on approval. I talked with a gal in the waiting room who went through her insurance and she only had to pay $5000 out of pocket for the surgery total since her insurance covered a large chunk due to the hernia repair.

I just had my surgery on 3/10, and the Dr. knew that I had a small hiatal hernia, which she said she would fix during the surgery. She did just that. I am going back for a post-up visit on Friday, so I will hopefully get some more information then, because I am having some occassional pain in that area, and I am not sure if it is where the hernia was fixed, or if it is gas..........

Good luck to you!

I had a Hernia in the GUT the size of a fist, and both Lymph nodes in the GROIN where removed, he thought cancer, but nope. Then he did my band. I spent 3hs. on the table.

My husband said he was beat! He did the band in 30 minutes. But he dug out the Hernia, and closed it with a red hot rod, like searing meat. So he burned the flesh together, and it held.

Was I sore! In the Groin.

My surgeon also said I have one and that it is common (about 40%) and he is going to use a couple staples to repair it. His words were "I'm on it." I'm not really worried because I have been going to the support group (all patients of my surgeon) and everyone has great positive comments about him. If you are uncomfortable about it you really should talk more to your surgeon about it and if you have a support group to connect with, then talk with others who have had the hernia as well.

It seems hernias are quite common. One of the recovery nurses mentioned it to me but when I asked the doctor at my first check up he was just like "Ya I fixed it". I was quite lucky because I did'nt really have much pain other then my port incision.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
