Too much Protein????

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any trouble with their kidneys since being banded? I am having trouble with them not functioning right. Seems it is due to too much Protein. I do not even get the 60 gram my doctor told me to get in. Never any trouble before the band, Should I be worried?

Why do you believe it's the protein?

If you are not eating 60 grams of Protein a day then its probably not the protein. Even in a person without the band up to 127 grams is needed to make the body function correctly.

That amount of Protein is should not cause kidney complications, assuming everything else is normal. If you're posting here to ask if you should be worried because your organs don't appear to be functioning properly, you should have already made an appointment with your doctor. :)

How is your Fluid intake? Specifically Water.< /p>

The main danger high protein diets have on the kidneys directly is, greatly simplified -- your kidneys are filters and high protein diets can clog/damage your filters with excess gunk to filter out.

Current dietary guidelines suggest 0.36 gm of protein per lb of body weight, so for someone who weighs 150 lbs 54 gm of protein is the ideal intake, which is 216 calories' worth.

Or more generically in RDA:

0 to 6 months: 9g

6 to 12 months: 11 g

1 to 3 years: 13g

4 to 8 years: 19 g

9 to 13 years: 34 g

14 to 18 years: 46 g for females and 52 g for males

19 to 70+ years: 46 g for females and 56 g for males

* 71 g during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Lifestyle can require more protein, but I don't think many of us here live that lifestyle (or we wouldn't have the band). :)

I went to Dr. and am repeating what he told me from blood work up. He says it has been this way since 3 months after I had surgery. It has been 20 months since surgery. It is the creatine (not sure how to spell it) that is too high. He seems to think it was too much Protein. I drink plenty of Water and some coffee and that is about all I drink.

I workout almost every night on the total gym, for at least an hour sometimes more.

Eating higher amounts of Protein has never been proven to cause problems in *healthy* kidneys even in people who follow a paleo diet that is all protein and daily consumption can be higher than 150gm. Elevated creatinine levels can be caused by a number of things including medications, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. I don't see how the band itself could cause elevated creatinine.

I am going to have to make another appointment and talk to him about it. I do not think the Protein could be the cause and since it seems nobody else has had this problem. He might need to do a more advanced test to figure out what is going on. I do take several different meds but they all are prescriptions from him so he should know if it could be the cause you think. It just scared me some.

Thanks everyone for your information and input!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
