when meeting with the nutritionist

Recommended Posts

I go to my pre op appt tomorrow. During this visit, I will see the nutritionist for the first time. When they mailed me a packet to fill out for this appt, included was a form for the nutritionist. I'm supposed to list everything I had to eat in the past 24 hours. My question is, will it hurt the decision of my surgery if I have bad things on this list that I ate? I mean, I'm overweight for a reason and I'm not currently "dieting". But I'm hating to write down what I'm eating today, knowing that she/he will see what I'm eating and think, no wonder you're fat. I don't want them to think I'm not trying either so I don't know what to do. I don't want to lie either. I'm an experienced (unsuccessful) dieter, I know what I should and shouldn't have but I am kinda out of control on what I eat..the reason I'm getting the band. Any suggestions?

I was scared to do the same thing but I did it truthfully and it helped because my nutritionist knew exactly what I needed to do to make sure I eat the right stuff after I'm banded.

The NUT will use that info to advise you on the dietary changes you need to make. For example, mine talked to me about the fact that I wasn't eating enough fruits and veggies and that I would need to significantly reduce my carb intake. The meeting had nothing to do with whether or not I was a candidate for surgery.

You need to be honest with them because that is the only way they can help you...

I would be brutaly honest with the Nut. When I started my journey I was told I had to loose 34 pounds. I was worreid becauase I had been eating better after I had suffered a stroke 3 months earlier. I was already exercising every day; so how was I going to lose that much weight? In addition to the Nut. I also had to attend 3 mindful eating group therapy sessions. Does your doctor have something like that? If not I would find one (preferrably run by a psychologist rather than an over eaters anon group. Those meetings really helped me see that while the types of food I was eating weren't high in fat/cal; I was just eating wayyyy to much. Also I realized that I did a whole lot of snacking more than I would have thought. I identified food triggers. There was a time that I would have four open bags of low fat chips, rice cakes, etc. I live alone! Anything that goes crunch that did not come out of the ground is a problem for me. I had to cut those things out of my food rotation.

Be honest. You can tell him/her that you wondered and know your choices are not good now but that you are ready for change.

Nope...they'll just use it as a "you're going to need to change this, this and this" checklist to show you how you should be eating...and will need to be eating after you're banded.

I would also write down exactly what you ate. The nutritionist knows like you said that all people seeking weight loss surgery clearly need help. I'm sure he/she will suggest healthier options for you and suggest that you try and stay away from the bad things. Although, they don't know how hard that is because they aren't food addicts like all of us. Just give it your best shot! Logging what I eat really helps me, I would suggest you do this going forward. When I don't log I eat lots of things that I don't realize I'm putting in my body and all those extra calories really add up and make my weight loss come to a hault. Good Luck!!!!!! :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
