Hypothyroidism to hyperthyroidism from weightloss

Recommended Posts

I am almost 2 years post-op. Have lost 120 pounds (still 40 pounds from goal) I have had hypothyroidism for the past 12 years and now suddenly its turned to hyperthyroidism. I'm getting really frustrated because I haven't changed a thing I am doing and can't seem to get the remaining weight off. I have continued to exercise everyday to keep up my momentum but the scale hasn't moved in several months.

People told me that once you get closer to goal that getting weight off was harder......they weren't kidding! Anyone else experience changes in thyroid since weightloss? Oh yeah, I am no longer having to take blood pressure meds. Yay!

Just curious, did your doctor watch your TSH levels and did you have any adjustments in your medication while losing? When I first got the LB, I told my endo about the surgery and he told me that he wanted to track my TSH because it was very likely that my Synthroid dosage would need to be lowered as I lost weight and he was right, I had to be adjusted down two times during my weightloss period.

Yes Jodi my doctor did monitor my thyroid and it began to change when I hit the 100 pound lost mark but it wasn't necessary to change my meds because I was still within normal range. Then suddenly I began having dizzy spells and figured out that my BP was too low. Doctor took me off BP meds then decided he better check my thyroid again and found I was hyper with my meds. was surprised because I did not realize that the disease would improve with weight loss. Needless to say, I'm thrilled! I am being re-tested soon and hoping to go off meds altogether. Also hoping once my thyroid is in normal range again that I will begin to lose more weight.

I am also on medication for thyroid, but so far I haven't had any changes. I do worry about it and will need to be rechecked in about 3 months. I thought as I lost weight, my medication would go down. Guess I'll just have to wait. But, I don't feel any different.

Hi Bobbi,

I didn't have any significant change until around 114 pounds. Just be sure your doc keeps checking your levels.

I am glad to see this post.

I lost my weight and was just yesterday diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.

Picking up my meds today.

Any advice you can offer me would be great.

I am within 10 pounds of goal and trying to take the last 10 off. Hyper doesn't seem to be helping me any.

Angel Eyes,

I'm sorry I have no advice to give since I am in the same position. Being hyper hasn't helped me any either. I just keep plugging away and exercising every day and hopefully the weight will come off! Best of luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
