HELP! Should I not lose the weight?

Recommended Posts

I have a dilemma. Talk to the nurse today and told her that I was still trying to lose on my own and she told me not too. In order to be approved for surgery, you must have a BMI of 40+ or 35 with 2 major problems like high BP or diabetes. Well I only have one (high BP) so if I loose 15lbs before surgery then I won’t be approved.

I guess my issue is if they put me on the Pre-op diet, will I disqualify myself if I lose too much? I’d hate to show up for surgery and have them say “sorry you’re not big enough”.

Current weight 218.6

Height: 5

Current BMI: 42.7

If I lose 15 lbs BMI goes to 39.8

They don't use your surgery day weight. It goes by your pre-op weight.

Most doctors submit your weight from the first consult (which was with the nurse. I did'nt meet him for another 5 weeks). Most doctors demand that not only you loose weight on a liquid preop diet but perhaps before that. I think you need to speak with the surgeon. My surgeon required I loose 10% body weight before they would schedule surgery.

If you have a lot of Protein, it can cause you to gain weight. There's a thought to help you out.

But don't loose weight or you may be out of luck.

whey is suppose to put on weight.

Good Luck.

Absolutely 100% follow your doctors instructions and not anyone on here. Your preop diet is for a very specific reason and for your health & safety. You will get insurance approval based on pre-procedure weight. They do not weigh you the day of surgery then call up insurance and say "oh by the way."

Maintaining your BMI until you get insurance approval woul dbe a good idea, but after that losing is great.

I received an approval letter from my insurance company about 2 months before. I would weight for that then lose as much as you can before your surgery because you want your liver to shrink so the risk of injury is decreased

How long have you been on the preop diet? If you have lost quite a bit, then I'm sure your liver has shrunk some.

The Nurse is wright. If you go below your required BMI for surgery, you can be disqualified.

This sounds crazy,,, but,,, if I were in your shoes... I would ware baggy pants, and have heavy fishing sinkers "EXAMPLE' sewn in the waistband. Their only interested in the scale....

Also fill your pockets, whatever it takes, so you don't get disqualified.

Yeagh the other person is write by sometimes they will get on the phone with the Ins. Comp., or push that pencil. Me I wouldn't gamble. I would somehow way myself down.

Think about all you been threw, and then getting turned down because the Ins. Comp. says from the looks of things, the patient can take off the weight, so surgery is not necessary.

You figure that out..... But I would sure do something..

I have already had this done once, and I am not missing a thing. Even my Ins. Nurse had me slow down a bit because it was looking to good.

So instead of trying to lose 50lb., they settled for 40lb., and told the Ins. Company She didn't quite make the goal, but she has tried. So were putting her through. Next thing I new, I was in having surgery.

Shirley.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
