So I was poking around a diffferent support board and saw a thread about what people have found they can't eat. I knew about the bread, rice, potatos, Pasta and carbonated drinks being no-nos, but on that thread I saw people saying they couldn't eat steak, chicken, lettuce, watermelon, pineapple, apples, grapes, tomatos (anything with a skin)... the list went on and on. Now I'm starting to wonder if maybe getting the lap band is a bad idea.

WTF can I eat? It looks like anything and everything can be problematic.

It is different for everyone, I have trouble with bread, but if i eat really really slow and take very small bites, it goes down ok. Rice is bad for me but those are really my only two food problems, oh, and eggs, but I'm not crayz about eggs anyway! Honestly, I find more problems with how I eat, too fast, too big of bite etc., then I do with what I eat. Ultimately, you'll have to decide but I don't think your dr would tell you anything was off limits (except carbination) if you, personally can handle it. I have no problems with any meats, fruits or veggies/salad. Good luck to you.

It depends on your restriction level. The only food I can say I have a problem with is bread early in the morning so I eat bread later on in the day. Otherwise, nothing, and I can eat anything without a problem.

I only have an issue with bread and Pasta and rice which I have lived without. I havent tried steak and all fruit is okay. I dont have problems with many things its all about the chewing and small bites.

I admit I've been feeling really devastated knowing bread, rice, eggs, some meats may not agree with me after surgery...what gets me thru though is knowing it's for my health. I'm way sadder about giving up some of these foods than I am about giving up sweets, ice cream, etc. But it's at a point now where my health and lifespan will suffer if I don't make this commitment.

It is different for everyone. I can eat anything - the only thing I have ever gotten stuck on are dry meats (chicken and pork). That said, I choose not to eat Pasta, bread, white rice, etc because they are the foods I tend to crave and by not eating them at all I am finding that my cravings are going down.

Thanks, all... between this and a friend of mine sharing her experience, I'm back on board with the surgery :D . It can be discouraging to run across threads like that, I just have to keep reminding myself that the day will come when I can eat anything I want (within reason), I just won't be able to while I'm working on getting to my goal weight.

It's all about perspective B) .

It's different with everyone and you also have to keep in mind that some people are getting filled too tight because they're trying to make the band physically restrict what they eat and go well past the point where the band is doing what it's supposed to be doing...curbing hunger. That was me before I understood how the band worked. Once my surgeon convinced me that my stuck episodes were a result of being overfilled...and took out almost 2cc...I was able to eat just about anything as long as I followed the rules of small bites, chew well and eat slowly.

everyone is different when it comes to the types of food their band won't allow. i eat chicken, Pasta, pineapple, lettuce... just fine. the only foods i can't tolerate are breads (unless VERY toasted) and ground meat... so no pizza or hamburgers for me. everything else is okay. while i can't eat a piece of pizza, i can eat the crust off 1 piece and the toppings off 2 pieces... which is the best part anyway.

you WILL learn to adjust to what you can and can't tolerate. don't put too much into what your band won't tolerate.

Not necessarily anything. I can't each dry meats, grapes, lettuce, oranges (just about all fruits are a no go). But everyone is different; you'll just have to find what works for you.

The ONLY thing that I can't eat is french fries. Hallelujah for that! I have no idea why (though I suspect it is speed), but the only times I've almost gotten stuck were with fries and I can always feel them going down slow. Now I don't eat them.

It's random. My band works well at a low fill level, so I don't have problems with anything else.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
