Well, Since last Feb I have lost 40 pounds on my own with self control and exercise. And no these shakes are making crash and burn. I find my self cheating. Because I get so hungry my stomach growls and hurts so then when I cheat I eat stuff I havent been eating, the bad stuff. Im getting this surgury for alot of reasons but mainly is to be healthy. Right now I feel like a failure.. Do I call my doctor and just tell him Im cheating or keep trying. I feel aweful

Jennie, I would speak with him about the problems you are having. I totally get this is hard believe me! Are you on Optifast or something similar or can you buy your own Protein powder? If you are buying powder they are not all created equal. They can range from 100-250 cal for 25-30 g of protein; and vary in carbs. I bring this up because if you chose Protein super low in carbs and calories then perhaps you could make them with fat free milk (which sure adds carbs but also ads 8 g of of protein). Also I add suger/fat free pudding powder, suger free chocolate syryup, or Davinchi suger free syrups found in the coffe isle. There are ways of making the shakes taste better.

Now some tough love. And a disclaimer. I am not a medical professional and you should always follow your doctors orders. If you are going to "cheat" know you are going to "cheat" and plan ahead. The planning ahead part for me has become one off my top 5 post banding eating rules. You mention being so hungry you eat bad things. My psychologist calls that irrational hunger: so hungry you can't control what or how much. She said never let yoursel get that hungry. You will choose inappropriate food. On this preop diet (high protein low carb); if you are going to eat would'nt it make sense to have grilled chicken breast strips (like premade ones from the store) instead of chips or crackers? If you don't plan ahead though you can't buy chicken breast from the vending machine at work.

Now for some chearing up. You did really well dieting in the last year. My nurse described surgery as follows: think of your torso as a over filled suitcase. When you lose weight it's like taking some of the clothes out. When the doctor goes in he has to feel around through a lot of stuff to get to the bottom where your stomach is. The less stuff in the way the easier his job. So by losing 40 pounds you've made his job easier; he's just looking for some more help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
