weightloss before first fill??

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I am a first time poster!

I was banded on the 24th of January and will have my first fill on the 23rd of March.

I have lost 7.5kg so far but i thought i would have lost more by now.

I am just wondering what others have lost during this period (before first fill), i am not excersing at the moment becuase i have an injured knee. I know that is impacting my weightloss.

I would really appreciate some feedback, i know everyone is an individual but i need to gauge what's going on with others.

I have not lost weight for the past 2-3 weeks. The dietician says that i need not to worry at this point, that my body is still recovering from surgery. for the past 2 weeks i feel like my appetite has returnded to normal. I have been able to eat everything, meat, bread, Pasta, rice, fruit, veggies (all in reasonable quantities) but i ahev been making healthy choices and keeping portions small. Having said that i do not feel like presently one cup of food is sufficient. I was previously having one cup of puree but after moving to solid food one cup isn't enough

I am also the person that has become totally obseesed with food. It's amazing what an emotional/ psychological journey this is! I am not the "over indulging" type but being told i can't have something is totally messing with my head!

I have had one episode of eating too much and was in the worst pain ever, other than that everything is going well.

thank you in advnace for your feedback, i need to know whether i am on the right track.

I think you are doing just fine. The first month or so is about healing, not weightloss. Any weightloss is a bonus. My advice to you is to stick to a high protien, low carb, low fat diet and to excersise. I know you have a bad knee, but maybe you can swim. Even just some moderate walking would help. Good luck!

You're doing great! The time between banding and the first fill is all about healing up. My surgeon was thrilled that I'd lost 19lbs before my first fill. He said a lot of his patients don't lose at all before the first fill.

My first fill was 5 weeks after my surgery and I had lost 22 pounds. That was quite a bit higher than most my dr. said but I was very heavy.

I lost about 10 pounds pre first fill; and then averaged 1 lb a week. Now that I am at restriction hoping to lose faster. Personally I would cut out the bread, Pasta and rice. They provide a lot of calories for not a lot of nutrition. Solid Protein stays with you longer so make sure to focus on that first and add the veggies second, and starch last. Have you bought a food scale? Personally I think it's a must. I weigh all my Protein. Some people also measure their veggies in a measuring cup. When the food is gone you stop eating, even if you are still hungry. Thus the phrase "bandster hell". You still have a fat persons stomach and brain; but are eating the portions of a thin person.

Until you start getting fills and restriction this is a willpower war. Some people are lucky and after 1-2 fills at 5CCs start getting help from the band. I was not. I did not start getting restriction until 10 CCs.

Also, I second the comment about swimming. Way before banding I went to a specialist about severe knee pain. Of course he said to me that weight had to come off and recommended swimming. I know how to swim but what fat lady enjoys a swimming suit? Anyway I bought a swimsuit with a skirt, snorkle, waterproof MP3 player; and have been swimming almost every day since 10/08. Not sure if it's a good cardio workout? Weight lost -120 pounds. That's like a whole person.

Hi all. I was banded on March 11, 2011. My first fill will be April 19th. I have lost 10 lbs since surgery and 16 since pre-op. I am so frustrated because I have been doing everything to lose weight. I was determined to lose 10 more before my first fill. The nutritionist said the majority of people do not lose weight after the initial first big drop until their fill. Most just stay the same. I talked with him today and his theory is that our bodies are recovering from the big shock and with the Water weight loss our bodies just hold on to it for a little while. That makes me feel somewhat better, but still frustrated. I am exhausting myself with nothing to show for it. So for now I am going to not worry about it and just wait until my fill.

113lbs. :)

Per the average weight loss with the band you are doing just fine. Keep pushing along and you're sure to see more success. Is your knee that injured that walking is off limits? If not, walk! Not all exercise has to be strenuous.

Good luck and you're doing great!

I had my lap band surgery on March 1, 2011. I have lost a total of 59 pounds since then including the 2 week pre-op shake diet. I am a big guy who also has a bad knee and have found that going for a walk on a daily basis has helped me dramatically. I walk for 45 minutes everyday. I have heard many people dont loose much weight until their first fill. I am having mine on April 15th. Keep motivated my friend and remember we are all in this together.

I was 240 my first weigh in at the very, very beginning - that was in Oct. 2010

February 2011 I was 244 after one week liquid diet too!!! (really depressing)

March 11, 2011 - day of surgery I then was at 229

March 15, 2011 I was at 233 first week post op appt.

April 8, 2011 - now down to 220

First fill - 4/14/11.

I like the specifics so I'd thought I would post my situation detailed. I have also heard that this first month pre first fill can be "band hell" whether it relates to pain, hunger.... With all the flucuating in my weight over the last couple months I do MOST definitely agree that the the first month is for healing. I still think, even with the loss, that it is more Water weight dropping, swelling going down, liquid limitations, etc. I feel that now that I have had healing time and I am only a week away from first fill, once filled - I can count the loss moving forward as band loss.

One more point - I totally agree with previous posters who talk about self control. Even if you feel like you can eat everything, don't. The reason that is most important for me to remember, being a newbie and all - is because it is about re-training my thought process. Think big, be big. Think small, be small. With the band's help of course...lol :)

I had my band surgery on Mar. 28th and I've lost 16 lbs so far. I had my post op visit yesterday and was amazed when I stepped on the scale cause I just don't know where it went. When I look in the mirror I don't look any different to me. Does that happen to anyone else? I get to start on mushies tomorrow and I can't wait to eat me some oatmeal for Breakfast. Just the chance to actually CHEW something has me excited.blink.gif

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
