Motivation/Exercise

Recommended Posts

I dont want to be smug since I've been totally good when it comes to exercise. Im very lucky that I was not too terribly far gone when I had my band and that I'm relatively young, pretty athletic and have 50% of my weight gone and am now only about 20kg overweight. But I've been running for the past 8 weeks or so and am getting so into it.

Two weeks ago my darling husband bought me a fantastic NordicTrack treadmill to supplement my outdoor running so I've been running about 5kms five or six days a week, a mix of outdoor and treadmill (most of the time). I can keep up about a 7.8km an hour pace now for 40 minutes or so. I did the Performance program on my treadmill last night though and it really whipped my ass. I've actually got a very upset tummy today, it was way too hard and I pushed myself to a heart rate of about 185 which is stupid. So rest day today.

I've also been doing resistance training with some very strong resistance bands which for some insane reason I like way more than free weights. Three times a week or so.

I started out slowly about 2 months before I got banded with some treadmill/elliptical and weights in the gym, now I'm seeing real results six months down the track and have the motivation to ditch my gym membership and do it alone. Having a treadmill at home means I can utilise the time I have in the afternoon and early evening to exercise rather than having to go to the gym in the morning when Eliza could go in the creche and therefore end up not doing many other things I needed to be doing - like housework, shopping, going to tutes/lectures at uni, etc.

This is the only time in my life that I've started out slowly and realistically (babying a bad ankle) and actually worked at it for long enough and consistently enough to get results. That's 2-3 times a week for a couple of months and the reward is that when you get to the point where you can handle quite intense exercise five days or more a week, that's when the weight simply pours off you.

I'm loving it now.

Jacqui,

Wow, that is very inspirational!! I also started off slow, quickly picking up the pace. It's been not even two months and I am already seeing results. Which is motivating me to work even harder. Prior to my move from Cleveland, OH to Maryland, I also had a treadmill, but sold it because I just didnt feel like moving it. BIG MISTAKE and I am already looking to buy another. Luckily for me, besides my dogs, I have a lot of free time for me. So I get out in the morning before work and walk, after work walk (a little) and doing a few step classes. I hope one day to be able to run, for long periods, without falling to the ground grasping for air :faint:

Congrats on your continued success!!!

Telly you have been doing a great job on the bike:) . I wouldn't stress about the sauna suit part just as long as you are moving your body. LSasha and Kee are a living testimony to the advantages of daily walking. 3 miles is almost 1 hour of walking so keep it up.

LSasha and Kee I am so proud of you guys:clap2: :clap2: .....oh yeah and baby Stocky.....you guys really make me a proud Momba:think . I am IMPRESSED!!! someone would have thought I birthed you guys:scared:.

Teresa were you reading my mind? hehehe

I was looking for this thread, but when I put in exercise it didnt come up with this because motivation is first? hmmm <bookmarking this one>

Someone kick my butt and remind me to exercise daily - take the pain and deal with it lol

I started exercising April 2nd and worked up to running last week, but having killer shin splints. I am trying to do this on my own because so I don't have a major problem with surgery May 26.

Anyone else have shin splints? if so what do you do about them?

Hey Telly, where do you get the sauna suit?

Lisa do you know why I'm gonna get whipped? LOL Hey Lisa maybe you shouldn't run just yet. Walking is great and should be a little easier on your shins.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
