Port locations: You have some options

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just wanted to see who else has their port in places other than under their rib cage. Mine is about six inches down from the top of my shoulder. The PA said that he can access it easier and use a much smaller needle for fills. Also, he said that it seems to be a less used, more comfortable spot.

So far it seems just fine. But I am going to ask next visit what will happen when I have my upcoming boob job. (hey -- if I loose the weight ==> i am getting myself a new, higher tighter set). B)

BTW: My husband is thrilled with the weight loss so far.

i'm curious... can you see the port where you have it? the skin seems much thinner up there than it would be on the belly. when you lose all your weight, will it be noticable?

Hmmm, that would be my worry. My BMI is down to 19 and you can see my ribs in my chest and at the sides (I need to gain a little weight). A port anywhere there would look truly awful and would be very easy to bump and damage.

As it is, it is below my ribs a few inches up and to the left of my belly button and so visible you can even see the tubing until it disappears into my chest and the little bubble bit on the top of the port. And that (apart from my saggy old bum) is the fleshiest part of my body! The port has been VERY visible since my BMI was about 30, I'm more pear shaped than anything so dont have a lot of flesh up top. If you could put the port on my ass, it would be perfect.

No, cannot see.the port, now. I do not know, but I doubt if it will be seen later. I am not too worried, it seems deep enough. But I will ask the PA., I do like the upper chest location over the other options. It will be covered by bathing suit top when on the beach.

My doctor also places the port below the shoulder. He told me most doctors don't do it there, but he has found that it is more comfortable there and more easily accessible.

I wanted to comment that we are both from GA. I had my surgery in Valdosta (2/15), so maybe it is something that the Georgia doctors are doing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
