Thank god for the lap band

Recommended Posts

Wow! you and lovinglife have done amazing things. I hope that this will be the turnaround you make for yourselves throughout life. Loving, I know that as a young man this will change your future. People will look at you differently, and supervisors will look at you as a go getter not a s a "fat" kid. Good luck to both of you! Form an "old lady". Karen

Hey Brian...thanks for the story! I feel encouraged hearing what you said. I am 6'2, 340 as of yesterday (the day I received my band). I really want to be around the 200 pound mark in a year. I keep seeing people talk about minimal weight loss so far and it's made me nervous. I want instant results of course. lol. Can you tell me what you've done to be so successful? Congrats and thank you again!!!!

Steven

Hey Steven!

I just wanted to drop you a line....I was banded July 1, 2010...I am down 120 lbs.....you know....having fills isnt a shameful thing....I see folks advertising it as if it is a merit badge...the truth is EVERYONE is different. and that is a totally lousy answer, but it is the truth...here it is...the band is a tool, and just like your treadmill, you have to use it, and use it correctly, and respect it...take care of it to work for you....I am not perfect by any means, but I have changed.....and the band wont change for you....YOU have to get to the gym. YOU have to eat right. YOU have to listen to your body...if you'r full, stop, if you're eating too much, GET A FILL...its not a bad thing..its part of using the tool correctly.

Personally, I typically dont do white carbs any more...just cant tolerate them, and I am ok with that....I am fine with lean Proteins, veggies, some dairy, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, small amounts of fruit...HUGE now with Beans and legumes ie...turkey chili, thick bean Soups, etc...

you really get out of it what you put into it.....dont let anyone else discourage you... but the basics still apply...ya gotta move.....hang in there!

Another thing that struck me....dont put yourself on a timeline....just do the best you can do to be healthy...stay in touch with your surgeon...go to support groups...you'll get there!

I was just banded 3/2 and I have not had a fill yet. I am going in 4/12 for my first fill and I feel like I need it even though I have lost 20 lbs already. Did you guys ever have one fill and than never needed another one? or you just never had any fills since the band was put in?

Hey there...just wanted to drop you a note...

I was banded July 1, 2010, and have lost 120 lbs..I have had several fills and unfills......It is NOT a bad thing at all...EVERYONE is DIFFERENT!!! if you are eating too much, then you need a fill, plain and simple, and it may take a few fills to get you to the point where you are eatint normal portions.....the band is not a static thing...especially if you are female....it can change on a dime, if you are sick, have allergies, or your cycle....it can get tight on you....its just the way it is..its a tool....but use it correctly and it will work for you!! please dont feel bad about getting a fill!! this is your band, and your body, you want it to work the best for YOU!

you need to be willing to change your eating habits, and patterns for this to work for you...you need to concentrate on lean Proteins, veggies, good fats first before those white carbs....I got used to it by getting stuck a few times and deciding it just wasnt worth it ;) it is what it is, right?/

and you have to move...I could starve completely and not lose a darned thing..

before you look at this post crosseyed, here's my life

I have THREE FOUR YEAR OLDS.....one with a major physical disability. also a 6 yr old. lots of different schedules, therapies, appts.....I also go to the gym about 2 hrs a day. and I have NO outside help.

I say this because if I can do this, anyone can...but you must make the decision......DO IT!

WOW-I totally hate you....LOL That is so awesome! No fills? I did not realize people did that.

I was just "revised" this week and am at no fill (or whatever they put in at surgery). I don't know if I could stay this way and still lose.

Congrats!

Just wanted to blow my own horn here... As of today, I am down 50 pounds since December 9. No fills yet. I hope to not have one because I see what people go through with varying levels of fill. Seems like such a delicate thing and I'm doing ok right now.

I feel fantastic and there are several other people that were banded by Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas that have had no fills with losing over 100 pds also. I feel very fortunate to be in this position with not having to play around with getting filled/unfilled repeatedly.

Why do you think the reason is that Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas can get his patients to have NO FILLS and still lose so much weight? iF HE HAS A TRACK RECORD OF THIS....THERE MAY BE SOME MAJOR PATENTS IN THE WORKS...BECAUSE THIS WOULD REVOLUTIONIZE THE PRACTICE THAT MOST LAPBAND DOCTORS HAVE.

Thoughts?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
