I have done my 6 months with my nutritionist and everything else. All I have left is my upper G.I endo procedure checking for hiatal hernia on Tues. and was wondering what I should expect. Anyone willing to share their experience would be greatly appreciated.

I am not quite sure what you are asking for....the endoscopy is easy and pleasant with a quick nap and no memory of the procedure. The upper GI is a little icky because of the drink but even that has gotten better from the last one I had 30 years ago and is over very quickly. Fasting is the most unpleasant part of both procedures.

Did I help?

Mimi

I didn't have to be tested before my insurance company approved me. My doctor does something that I thought was pretty clever. He has a release form you can sign that says when he does my band procedure and he see's a hiatus hernia, he will go ahead and fix it as well. Rather than having two different surgeries he does them both at the same time. I thought it was a good idea.

My band surgery included repairing a hiatal hernia and a ventral hernia. They did them all at the same time. (I asked them to, since I figured as long as they were under the hood, they may as well do a full tune up. My insurance paid for it all.) Other than me ending up with more incision sites than those who only get banded, everything was the same. Most bandsters end up with five or six incision sites. I have thirteen. Eek! :)

The endoscopy will be a non-event for you. They'll anesthetise you, and you'll take a nice nap. While you're out, they run a camera down your throat to check your lower esophagus for the hernia. They'll find one or not, assess how best to repair it, then remove the camera, and wake you up. The most you may feel afterwards is a minor sore throat. In my case, I didn't feel a thing, and within a half hour I was good to go.

I found out I have a hiatal hernia during my upper GI. My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday and I havent heard from my doctor yet what to expect in regards to the hernia.

The upper GI was gross tasting, but otherwise pretty easy.

Hi guys...Thanks for posting about this situation...I go to my PCP tomorrow to get her blessing for the surgery (which she's been pushing for years) so I'm not sure what my surgery date will be...I do meet with the surgeon on April 12. But my question was regarding my hiatal hernia and if it was something they could fix while they were in there. I will defintely ask that when I go! Thanks again for the information and I"m glad I found this site!

I was banded 2/24/11 and had a hiatal hernia repair and epigastric hernia repair along with the band the same time. I didnt get any extra scars from the procedure. I do have all my scars on the left side tho since i had scars from other surgeries on the right side. I only have 5 very tiny incisions and one large incision from the port site. They say the only difff i feel is a tugging almost feels hard to swollow things that was the first week. after that everything else has felt normal. The doc said i may feel that tugging for 3months but its been 13 days and amazingly i feel great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
