Day 3 after surgery.

Recommended Posts

Day 3 after surgery. Was hopping for no complications and easy recovery.. But S%$# happens. Due to my old surgeries, banding took over 2h and got 8 halls in my tummy.

I am so-so glad I did my research and found the RIGHT doctor - Dr Fielding. I am sure if it was any other doc I would of had an open surgery.

So now I am home and recovering. I can drink, and I am forcing the required Protein Drinks in me.

Forcing is the key word. I am obviously not hungry - only 3 days post opp. But I am also afraid I will fail in weight loss or even worth will require revision or band removal if I eat.

So my question is:

Is it normal to be scared of food even liquids after the surgery?

I am five days post op and I am just getting to the point where eating is not a chore. But I am still not getting in as much Protein as a should and Im sure I need to be eating more. I know I am not getting enough Water in. Not anywhere close to finishing a whole bottle in one day which is 32 oz. Let alone getting two in like before surgery. But its baby steps. And at day three I can tell you for sure I was not eating as much as I am today. As you feel better and get up and more around more you will want to eat more. Its simple, your food is your energy. So when you get up and more around you burn energy meaning you will need more. Just stick to what your doctors say to eat. I would assume they say Protein drinks and Clear Liquids. chicken broth, beef broth, I have muslce milk, ensure, special k Protein Drinks, slim fast. and then of course you can always add more Protein to your protein drinks to help get in more.

Sounds like you are just fine. Good luck.

Yes, entirely normal when you're afraid of what might happen if you eat! I've only dim memories of the post surgical phase, it was over five years ago now, but I've recently had a bowel obstruction and that was pretty darn painful. I was 3 days of nil by mouth in the hosptial, then onto post procedural fluids. It took me 2 weeks to get up the courage to move off mushies, and only at the urging of my surgeon and oncologist who were threatening sustagen (urgh) because I'd dropped to 58 kgs which is well and truly in the underweight territory for me. I was really scared of a recurrence and felt quite sure I could live on mushies indefinitely, lol. But naturally everything was absolutely fine.

Post lapband - you might find your weight does strange things as you move through phases. I mean you've done pre op - and probably had significant weight loss - then pre surgical fasting, then a while with no food and then liquids, move onto mushies or solids and your weightloss will most probably stop, that's if you dont actually gain a couple of pounds. Be logical - you CANT gain 3 lb of fat overnight, its physiologically impossible, you know its got to be Water weight. Dont let it get you down, try not to weigh yourself daily, stick with the progam and you will succeed at this, but know that weight doesnt drop steadily, logically or predictably week by week and prepare for that fact

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
