Post Surgery Eating

Recommended Posts

I had my Lap Band Surgery on March 1, 2011. Procedure went very well. I have had no nausea or vomitting. It is so hard to drink these Protein Shakes though. I realize I need them, but I am going to the health food store tomorrow to get some Protein liquid where I can just take a couple Tablespoons and be done with it. I am also wondering how soon is to soon to start eating some egg beaters. My paperwork says that I can advance to the next stages if I tolerate everything ok, but I don't want to mess anything up. If I just take tiny bites over several minutes would the egg hurt me if it didn't make me throw up? I have had some baby food, pudding and Soup and I have done great. I'm ready to advance a little bit more.

Not entirely sure what to tell you. Every surgeon and nutritionist says incredibly different things on this subject. My surgeon only started allowing me mushy foods post op day 13 ( yesterday). Though i don't trust everything his PA's tell me. They said i didn't need the Protein Shake and wouldn't let me eat anything more than broth for the first 13 days. My personal opinion is that you may want to wait for the initial swelling to go down before starting on more solid or mushy foods, maybe day 7? But I'm not a doctor, and by no means well versed on this subject.

I would wait at least 7 days. Then start adding in things like chili, oatmeal and mashed potatoes for a week or so, then start with egg salad, tuna salad, scrambled eggs, toast, crackers for a week, then regular diet.

Mine was

7 days full liquids

10 days pureed food

10 days soft foods

then regular foods day 28

It's a good learning experience to go through the healing process.

Tip, get pre-made shakes like Myoplex or Pure Protein those go down much easier.

Hello I had my Lap Band Surgery on March 2nd and my procedure went well. I had dry heving after trying to drink to fast. I am tired of the Protein drinks and the Jello..LOL! I want to advance on to full liquids by this week as well but dont know when is the best time to move on. I read the Full Liquids section it states yogurt and cream Soups which I am thinking now since we can have broth I will just drain the chicken noodle soup and eat that because the broth is not my favorite. I been online looking to see where I can find other things to do while on clear diet but found nothing but the same popsicle, Jello and Water with crystal light. Let me know what you found out about advancing to the next level. I am glad to have someone to relate to and it may sound crazy but i am also ready for the baby food..LOL!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
