Anyone else having problems eating in the morning?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I am about 2 months post banding and having problems eating solids- in the mornings. oatmeal, liquids, yogurt, go down just fine. I thought I had read on here awhile back, that some people were having this problem. I haven't had a fill yet and there is no saline in my band ( I asked). Yesterday I tried eating an egg- and ended up PB'ing it up. Been this way for about 2 weeks since I advanced my diet to include meats. Trying to get in all that Protein the doc wants me to have daily without resorting back to the shakes. Any advice?

I have that problem some mornings and I have been banded since Sept. It started after I got my fill. I try to eat egg whites/cheese and some type of meat. My band is tight in the a.m. Try drinking a warm cup of tea in the a.m. before eating. A lot of mornings I will have oatmeal. At lunchtime it starts opening up. By dinner time I have no problem eating. Good luck.

It's a little odd that you have trouble eating in the morning since you are "healed" from sugery and don't have any fill yet. I will say that in general my nurse said that liquid in the band is in one position from you sleeping all night; and that as the day progresses it settles due to gravity. But you don't have any liquid. Are you getting full from small portions in general or are you stopping when your alloted portion is gone? There are those who never need a fill. You could be one of those people.

Many of the people you read from probably have fill. I believe I am at restriction. My nurse said that I may have to wait a few hours after waking up to eat. My Breakfast is however yoghurt so I don't really have a problem. If you want to up your Protein level you could try the following: Use greek yoghurt (2X the amount of Protein then regular, I use Chobani non fat with fruit), 1/2 scoop vanilla whey isolate, splendra, benefiber, 1 protein scoop Kashi Go Lean Protein Cereal.

HI there,

I'm 3 months post op and haven't needed a fill yet. I do sometimes wake up in the morning feeling like a kind of ... how to describe it... a tiny sort of ache where I think my band is placed. I always drink my coffee first thing so if it is "tight" then I think that loosens it up - I usually eat about an hour after I have my coffee. This doesn't happen every day and there's no rhyme or reason to when it does happen but sometimes I do feel a little something there. Then again... it could totally be in my mind. Ummm yeah... my response here was really helpful wasn't it? Sheesh.

I'll leave it instead of deleting it in case it helps someone.

Pretty normal. As u lose weight, it will get easier because the band loosens as the fat in that area goes away. e.g. why we continue 2 get 'fills'. Try sipping hot liquids (coffee, etc. ) 15 mins. before eating. May help. I continue having trouble w/scrambled eggs, and my morning meds.

Hello,

My instructions say to start the day with warm Water to help flush out mucous in the pouch. I was told that our bands are tightest in the AM. My surgeon, who has a band, says that he always has a shake/smoothie for Breakfast for this reason.

From the beginning of being banded, I've always had trouble eating anything in the morning. (Or even after a nap!)

I have a Protein shake in the a.m. I don't think I'd be able to get in all my Protein without them....

I usually cant have solid food til dinner time.. breakfast is usually a muscle milk shake, lunch yogurt, and dinner is a meat... mostly in the am my dr says the pouch is tighter... its normal.

I also can't eat in the mornings. I have a really large cup of coffee with nonfat milk. I will then eat breakfast around 9:30 or so. Sometimes I forget to eat until it is lunch time...:) eggs I have a hard time eating....My surgeon says that when your sleeping saliva builds up in your pouch so better to drink something warm when you wake up to drain the saliva...but then my coffee fills me up and gets me through the mornings.

I have this problem also. Can not eat in the morning any time. 1 cup of coffee and then a Protein Shake until my first break at work. So I am usually up for about 4 hours before I eat something solid. Protein Shakes are a life save. I am at a really good restriction right now. I have 9.5 cc in a 14 cc band. Losing slowly but steady. My doctor states most people have a hard time with solids in the am and not to worry as long as you are getting your Protein and Water in daily!!! Good luck.

I don't eat Breakfast anymore. Before I was banded, I loved Cereal or Protein Bars, but those don't sit well anymore. I don't remember the last time I ate Cereal, but I have given up on breakfast. Some days I won't eat until 12:30 or 1 in the afternoon.

My doctor told me that breakfast was the least important meal for banded patients.

THanks for all your replies....its very comforting to hear that others experience the same thing. Sometimes I worry my band has slipped- though I have no nausea, no vomiting, and only occasional very mild acid reflux.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
