I've seen a couple people post about not taking ibuprofen and the like...nothing has even been said to me by my doctor about this. Can anyone tell me why you aren't supposed to take this if you have a lap band? I plan to ask my doctor next time I see him but would like to know what others have been told here.

My understanding was that it can cause erosions and increased risk for ulceration. I have taken motrin for short term, I had some dental work done and the vicodin was too strong for me so I took motrin for about 3 days. I told my dr and they said it was ok for short term but try not to take it

The Lap Band makers say "use caution when taking NSAIDS as they may cause irritation". They do cause irritation for me so I don't use them.

I had seen the same things about NSAIDS on this board, so I asked my surgeon about it Wednesday. He said that they don't want you to take them often. They prefer that you take NSAID free medications because they can cause ulcers in your pouch. No more nyquil for me :( but I tried theraflu and it works great also :)

I don't think Nyquil has NSAIDS, I thought it had acetaminophen which is not an NSAID

I take the liquid ibuprofen and wash it through with a large glass of liquid so there is nothing hanging around in my pouch. I think if a person has good restriction then coated ibuprofen would not be a good idea as it will sit in the pouch for a long time. Of course I discussed it with my surgeon ahead of time.

I just came back from my appointment with the PA, and I asked her, because I have been wondering myself. She said since the pouch that was created is smaller, there is less surface area which leads it to take longer for the NSAID to be dissolved. So that it is sitting there longer and can cause erosions and irratation. Now she confirmed what I had thought originally that you can take advil and suck for headaches and such, it is more of continued use that can cause a problem. I've been taking advil for the occasional headache since my band because I had thought that once in a while was not going to be a problem and I was right. So if you need it for arthritis or something you should not take it, but once in a while is fine.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
