I started experiencing symptoms of cold yesterday.. Today I am experiencing an almost constant cough...non productive. I am not wanting to report this to my health team for fear of canceling the surgery. I probably wouldn't be able to get scheduled for another month or so. Any suggestions what to do? Novena

More than anything you are stressed. This is a very important, stressful time in our lives. Make sure you get enough sleep, and drink your Water. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hi:

I don't think you said how close to your surgery date you are. If it is very close you really should tell your surgeon because you probably shouldn't have anesthesia if you have a cold. Remember, it's always best to be honest with your healthcare partners. They can't react to things that they don't know. In the big picture, you've probably been overweight for a very long time and one month shouldn't make a difference.

Take care.

Sue

Absolutely tell your doctor. Have you already has your pre-op appointment? I had my pre-op appt a week before my surgery and day 3 of a cold with a low grade temperature. I was in the exact same situation as you.. freaking out! On top of my cold, I was day three of antibiotics from PINK EYE that my toddler gave me!!!! I went to the pre-op appt with swollen, red eyes, a stuffy nose, sweaty/clammy and I basically look like crap.. or looked high :D.

I also have asthma and typically my colds go to my chest into a productive cough by the last week of the cold. I 100% knew that if I couldn't get over the cold that with a chest cold and asthma, surgery was NOT safe. I did joke that if I had to be rescheduled after the 2 week pro-op diet, I was going to say F it and get Burger King hehe.

My advice: Rest, fluids, rest, fluids, rest, rest, rest! That weekend I drank a ton of Water and took several naps and the cold went away before surgery. Be honest with yourself; surgery is nothing to sneeze at (ha ha, I'm funny). Going under anesthesia is serious and not to messed with. A postponed surgery is much better than a risky surgery and a harder post-op recovery. You'll want to rip your gut out if you have a sick cough post-op, because the deep tissue sutures hurt when you sneeze or cough. Another fact I learned.

Good luck... rest, fluids, rest, fluids...drink drink drink!!

Call your Family Dr., and get something to knock it out....

If they do surgery, and you have a cough, you could develop a Hernia from all the coughing.

I'm sure you don't even want to go there..

Hope you are feeling better.

I want to thank all of you for your very good advice. It's good to hear your support...especially now.

As for update, I put myself on bed rest. It wasn't hard to sleep the hours away. This morning I was feeling much better. Only problem is the congestion in my head remains...so I started steaming with Sage...an ole naturalistic trick I used to use when fighting a cold and singing in choir. Anyway...the congestion is breaking a little...at least I can breath from my nose.

One of the reasons for the urgency on my part is that I will be turning 69 then end of April. Normally this health team does not do this surgery on people as old as me. I suppose they cleared me because of my general health and active lifestyle...(when not sick!) I am concerned this will be my only chance to have this surgery.....Open to suggestions. Thanks again, Novena

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
