Couple of Questions from a Newb

Not been Banded, yet. My wife is worried, the same topics that others on here have heard, too fast losing weight is bad, stress on your body and heart, etc... Stress from being overweight is just as bad.

My physical descriptors:

6"1'

326 pounds

43.01 BMI

3XXL shirts

44-46 pants

19.5 neck

I am weird, all my weight is on my waist. My arms and legs are rock solid. I work out 6 days a week with 30 minutes of cardio 3 days a week, and 3 days of 20 minute cardio and 30 minutes of circuit/strength training.

I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking?

1. What is losing TOO much weight? I mean I am a pretty big guy (muscle mass) - and would prefer not to lose too much of that musculature.

2. The tickers on the bottom - are you using BMI size? The reason I ask, is that, I am a large framed guy. When I was at my best, I was 240 pounds and 5% body fat. Those were the days of XL tshirts (tight) and 30 inch waist. My regular Doctor told me flat out I will NEVER be what the BMI says I should be, at 145-189 pounds. He told me I would look emaciated.

Thanks!!

I've never understood what people mean when they say 'don't lose too fast'. You'll lose what your body will lose, assuming you're being reasonable about your nutrition. The more overweight someone is, the faster they'll initially lose weight. When I was 330 lb., I ate low carb diet and lost 70 pounds in 3 months ('too fast' by most experts standards) and I was eating about 2700 calories a day. Yet the only way to slow that weight loss down was to either eat more calories (really?!) or more carbs...and as a diabetic, the higher the carbs I eat, the more problems I have with blood sugar.

You'll have to figure out what adequate nutrition is for you based on your activity level...and your body will lose as fast...or as slow...as it is going to.

Based on your measurements and description I would say we are pretty close in size and shape. When I was first considering getting the band I had a lot of people in my life who all of a sudden became medical experts telling me that losing weight too quickly and eating less would actually be harmful. While I can see where there is some small truth to that, I don't think that that will be the case with the band. I talked to my primary care doctor and any lapband team (nutritionist, psychologist and surgeon) and they all told me pretty much the same thing, getting banded is one of the best avenues to take in getting as close to a "normal" BMI as I can.

My Endo doctor put it the best, "The stress of losing weight on the body over 1-5 years is immaterial when you consider what the body must endure over a lifetime of being obese."

I know that there is a pretty substantial aftercare program with my surgeon's office and I am sure if I begin to lose weight faster than they would like, they can help be balance out my activities, eating, and fill quantity. Since I have been on my journey, I have lost about 20 lbs and I am gearing up for my surgery on March 10th. You just have to work with you care teams and leave the medical advice to them. I recommend taking your wife with you to see your doctor so she can air her concerns as well. After all, she will be the biggest part of your team helping you on your way.

I have lost 107 pounds in 9 months and am now maintaining at a normal bmi. I am much healthier at 155 pounds than I was at 262 pounds. Losing it fast hasn't hurt me in any way that I know of (yet). I was on 2 bp meds and pre-diabetic but now off bp meds and my blood sugar is fine. I don't know if losing too fast will have any ill effects on you or not, but consider the other great benefits.

Another thing to consider is some people are slow losers. I measure out all my food, count calories, exercise daily and still only lose on average one pound a week. I think alot of people get the idea that they will lose3 3-4 pounds a week for weeks on end. The truth is those people are the exception to the rule.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
