Interesting article on AOL - lapband and...

Recommended Posts

bypass results the same after 5 years. Yes we lose slower but after 5 years the results are the same as a bypass patient. The article continued to say how surgeons are now realizing that the band is the way to go and some are only doing bypass on high risk patients (ie - heart problems, etc..)

Anyway just thought it was interesting

My surgeon told me the exact same thing! He said that he is only encouraging HIGH Risk patients for the Bypass surgery. The one's who just want a quick fix will have to meet certain criteria i.e heart problems, life threatening things. I am glad that I am losing weight period and not gaining so if this is considerd slow 40lbs in 4 months then oh well! LOL

At a support meeting I went to the other night, the surgeon was saying he is seeing bypass patients begining to GAIN back their weight after a certain amount of years.

He said after a while, the body can take on more food, and unless you have changed your eating habits and your way of life, and not just relied onthe bypass, you start to gain again.

You said it!! It is a lifetime commitment of CHANGING our habits. It doesn't matter truely what type of surgery we would have..If we don't change our head & our habits we will not change our lives.

That being said..I will try more than ever to change my head now for the future..starting right....NOW!...no NOW...now...I mean NOW! There finally did it...Hopefully it will keep for the next minute or two!:0):)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
