Hi all,

I was banded four days ago and I am wondering if this is normal. I can swallow Protein Shakes, Jello, Soup and popsicles fine, but every single time I swallow Water it hurts! It feels like I have to burp really bad and can't. It's making it very challenging to stay hydrated. Asked the nutritionist at my doc's office and she just said to drink it room temperature, it's the swelling. That doesn't seem to help though. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks!

Michelle

I'm guessing that you take a bigger swallow when you drink Water, but the other drinks you sip more slowly. I'd try drinking Water fairly warm (if you can do that). It makes you sip, instead of gulp. You might even try a straw. Many doctors don't want their patients using straws, but I tend to sip more slowly when I drink with a straw.

I had the exact problem. When I sipped Water, it would go down no problem, then wait a brief second and you can feel the water pass through the band, with pain and sometimes gurgling. Called the Dr.told him I was getting no fluids, and he had me come in, 2 days after surgery. I demonstrated sipping water for him. He inserted a syringe in my port to make sure there was no air in the band. I left his office feeling no better. He told me it was probably post op inflammation. It did slowly get better, and was all gone in a day or 2.

I was banded 3 days ago and the first day I could drink Water with no problems but I started having the sampe problem yesterday afternoon. I noticed that I can get warm coffee down easier and I can get my water down a lot better if I stand up when I am drinking it.

I had my surgery July 14 2010 and yes, the colder the Water the harder it was to go down. Even now ice Water does not go down well, I tend to drink it room temperature and it goes down much better. Remember to sip and not gulp so as not to create air bubbles.

Hope this helps. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
