TexasNurseMom 5 Posted February 22, 2011 So question about eating. What are te rules about Condiments? What about seasonings? What about things like pickles, olives or that kind of stuff?
muelle 64 Posted February 22, 2011 I don't use any Condiments at all, I don't even use dressing on my salads. They are usually high in sugars so I stay away from them. I do however eat pickles. They are high in sodium so I limit my intake of them, but they are low in calories and curb my salty, crunchy cravings. As far as olives, I stay away from them also, they have fat with no nutritional value.
nomorejellybelly 77 Posted February 23, 2011 I use whatever I want, but within reason.
honk 780 Posted February 23, 2011 I use mustard on chicken breast "wraps" made with lettuce leaves. mayo is a no too high in fat and calories. I would disagree that you can't have olives. Greek Olives (black) are where you get Olive Oil from which is good for you. They are high in calories and fat so eat them in moderation. You can however slice them into thin pieces and put them on things.
ElfiePoo 109 Posted February 23, 2011 It depends on the diet or way of eating you choose to do. If you're doing low carb, low fat, restricted calories...you can have pretty much what you want as long as it's sugar free and fat free and fits into your daily calories. If you're doing Atkins, like I do then I can eat the full fat dressings but I have to watch the carbs, so many times even the sugar free stuff is outside my carb budget. If you're just watching calories, then you can eat pretty much what you want as long as it's budgeted into your daily calories. .
reverie 49 Posted February 23, 2011 I use "light" salad dressings; usually Italian though I've found a pretty decent light ranch dressing with good macros. That's about all I use; not a ketchup/mustard fan. I use low-carb Pasta sauce though I found a sauce made by Classico that is only 3 carbs per 1/4 cup so I picked up some of that. I also use the new Philadelphia Cooking Cremes when I'm making a stir-fry or something similar. I used soy sauce a lot but even the low sodium kind is outrageously high in salt levels so I've gotten rid of it.
vlp1968 83 Posted February 23, 2011 Watch out for ketchup- lots of carbs and calories. Mustard is a much better option. I use light mayo- only 20 cals per Tbls. Best wishes!

Though I'm not a ketchup person I have used it in recipes (ie. homemade barbecue sauce) and Heinz does sell a low carb/low sugar ketchup. It's called Heinz Reduced Sugar Ketchup. It's 1 carb per tablespoon. A bit pricier than normal ketchup but it's healthier!
TracieCat 8 Posted February 23, 2011 I don't really count Condiments too much other than my fat free mayo, which I do add to Fitday when I use it, which isnt too often. But I make my own ketchup homemade so I know what is in it and I use either mustard or dijon mustard from time to time and I dont normally add it to my nutrition counts. But I do add salad dressings when I use them and I tend to stick with fat free italian or fat free vinaigrette. There is a fat free balsamic that I really enjoy.
