Climb for Cancer

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So I have decided (before banding) that I will do the climb for cancer this year in Flagstaff...with my friend from work who does it everyyear. Her mom died of cancer...my grandmother did...everyone pretty much knows someone...but basically its like 8 miles up a mountain...they do have buses if you just cant make it. But I am inspired to make this trek with her this year. I want to be under 200 pounds by then which in itself will be an amazing feat.

Right now I can do 2 miles on flat ground fairly easily but this is quite a hike in already high elevation (7500 feet near the bottom) I am a bit worried about it and wonder if anyone has any advice as to the best way to train for this event.

Insane? No. I think this is a great goal for anyone and it's for good reason too! I'd suggest using a treadmill and slowly upping the incline.

When is the climb? My only advice is to get outside for hikes, because I found out the hard way that being on solid ground is a lot harder on your joints than the treadmill. My knees still hurt 4 days after my first 5K. If I were doing it, I'd use the treadmill to build up endurance, mixed with outdoor hiking to get used to the terrain.

This is not insane, it's a great goal to shoot for!

I just wanted to tell you good luck and what a great goal to have. I have a 5 year old with cancer so it's always great to see people doing these type of events. I can't wait to be able to do 5k's in honor of my son.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
