Soup Question

Recommended Posts

Okay, this might be a really dumb question but...

I don't have the band yet but I was just curious. Of course you're allowed Soup during the liquid stage but are you allowed it during the normal food stage? I mean, you're not supposed to drink with meals and it could technically be like "drinking" with the broth or whatever.

Just curious.

Well, there is nothing wrong with having Soup once in a while but it will go right through your band so it probably will not fill you up. (slider food) However, I make soup once in a while and I make it nice and thick with lots and lots of vegies and meat such as chicken or beef. I figured it all out and one cup of my home made soup had aprox. 150 calories and 9 grams of protien. I get plenty full, although I probably eat a little more than the standard 1 - 1 1/2 cups. It's not something you should have all the time but it certainly can't hurt once in a while. You want something that will stay with you so you are not hungry an hour later. Good Luck to you!

LOL good points, I actually look forward to fill days because then I can have my Soups without feeling guilty lol. But yes you need to really watch how much Soup you have while on normal days because it will either A) go right through the bad or B) if you drink it after eating it will push the food on through just like drinking.

Hi! I was told that if you have soup - to have it before you eat your reg food so that it doesnt push your food through. :)

I do it occasionally. But yea, like everyone said it's just not filling because it slides. Sometimes I'll do chili or something thick as a meal.

Strangely I find Soup VERY satisfiying and even hard to eat at times. Add in even a 1/4 square of a piece of wholegrain bread or a cracker or two, and those swell in the liquid in my pouch and I have myself a meal that will sit a LOT longer than say tuna and salad. But I'm VERY cautious about how much bread/crackers, lol, anymore and WHAM, stuck and up comes the lot.

I love Soup. I eat it regularly. But I try not to eliminate much of anything from my diet (because this isn't a diet....I'm finished with diets forever) which is different than the way most banded folks use their band.

Checked out your blog. The Falafal Burgers look great and the recipe looks simple enough so I am going to try that middle eastern favorite. Thanks

I eat Soup frequently--it's my favorite food! Maybe it's because I'm just used to smaller portions now, but it usually fills me up as well as any other meal, though it's probably because I prefer creamy or chunky Soups to broths.

I never had Soup in the beginning because I too was told it is a slider but now I disagree. Maybe a broth soup is a slider but a hearty bowl of soup with veggies and meat is very satisfying for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
