I read a post on here today that someones doctor told them not to use NSAIDS cuz it can cause "Band Erosion"

Now does it really case the BAND to erode or ulcers in the stomach??

Also can too much coffee do the same thing? and how much is too much?? :unsure:

I take 8000 iu of quality fish oil in lieu of NSAIDS or steroids. They work amazingly well for painful conditions like arthritis, joint pain, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel, and excema, etc. I have all these conditions and am symptom free-- So far, no problem taking the gelcaps, all 9 at a time before bed. They must dissolve quick enough so it hasn't been problematic, but if so I would just span the dose at a few 3 times a day.

The key is QUALITY fish oil. The only brand I've found so far is from Spectrum Organics FISH OIL 1000 units...you can get 240 for about $20 and it lasts about a month at this dose. Everything else, even liquid, doesn't seem to have enough EPA (the anti-inflammatory agent) or else the gelcap is crappy so it can't be absorbed properly.

Not sure what that is, but the band is outside your stomach.. how can it erode it?

I don't think it causes band erosion as much as can lead to or be a factor in band erosion because the way NSAIDs can affect (weaken) the stomach lining. I was also told during pre-op counseling NO NSAIDs and NO NYQUIL forever. Small price to pay!

This has always been a topic on the boards for as long as I've been on here...some physicians don't even mention it to their patients.

Ibuprofen is the only thing that will kick my headaches other than Migraine meds which are expensive, so I used to take a children's Motrin chewable with alot of Water whenever I needed them. Unfortuately, the powers that be took them off the market for awhile. The last I heard was that they should be back on the shelves in late Spring. Alternatively, there are children's ibuprofen in liquid form available, however, it's not the most convenient for carrying around in your purse.

As long as you use them sparingly, take a form that dissolves easily and can "wash" the meds past your band, you shouldn't have a problem. I let my surgeon know I was taking them this way and he didn't have a problem with it. From what I understand, you just don't want the medication sitting above your pouch irritating your stomach lining.

So, I'm not advocating daily use, but occasional use when needed in the proper form should be okay. However, I would always get your own physician's opinion on the matter and let them be aware of what you proposed to do.

NSAIDS= non steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs....

I understand the band is on the outside I was just making reference to another post I read.

I was made to stop taking my NSAID arthritis meds 2 weeks before surgery. I was told it irritates the stomach lining and causes ulcers, and can erode the stomach to the point where the band ends up on the inside of the stomach. My stomach is fine but I can hardly walk now. I miss Vioxx.....

All fish/krill oil is not created equal. Especially when you need a therapeutic dose for anti-inflammatory reasons, most of them will not cut it. It's extremely important that you get the highest EPA from a quality brand so your body can absorb it. Krill oil might be awesome (I don't know) but I would check the EPA first then find out if your body will actually get it all :)
