Do I need the Band??

Recommended Posts

Well, I am 5-8 to 5-9 and weight about 268. I think I want to get the band, but am not sure. I know I weigh WAY too much, and know that I have tried every diet I have ever heard of, with the most success coming from traditional diet and exercise (lasted about 5 months, and I went from about 255 to 220). Now, I weigh more than when I started that diet (2 years ago) and am constantly gaining. I def feel lost with my weight problem (I think I am a binge eater/emotional eater/bored eater), but I dont know if the problem is bad enough to warrant surgery. I dont know if the Doctors are going to say "You're not nearly big enough for bariatric surgery." I mean, I would like to get the surgery if it was available, but I dont know that I will be a candidate.

Anyway, I have insurance so that is a plus, and I am scheduled to go to a meeting Thurs night to get a consultation at the local hospital.

So, just looking for advice from people who know more about it than I do.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome :-)

I am around the same weight and a little shorter. I understand what you are saying about whether you think you are big enough for surgery because I went through the same thought process with myself. I have my pre-op appt tomorrow and to be honest I am still thinking it! I believe it is a major decision you have to really be ready for. Go to the seminars and talk with your doctor. Being "big enough" has nothing to do with it, it's about being healthy and feeling good about yourself.

Good luck!

It's a big decision, and one I do not regret. The major things I considered were 1) My age and health prognosis plus likelihood of changing lifestyle without the band 2) Chances of success-feedback of others 3) Safety and invasiveness of procedure.

All things considered, it was a no brainer for me! Good luck! :)

Thanks for the replies so far, and I guess I should have mentioned that I am a male, which puts my current BMI at 40.5, which is right on the border, as I suspected.

I dont think there is any chance of me attaining a "normal" weight (the BMI calculator says "healthy weight" is 155, but I dont think I could ever get that small....175-180 would be comfortable for me) without surgery, so that is my main motivating factor. Plus, I have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and diabetes runs rampant in my family.

You are definitely a candidate from a medical/insurance perspective. They will band you with a 40 BMI with no co-morbidities (and you have a number of them). Co-morbidity is a weight related health problem. If your BMI was 35 with those health probs you would be approved.

I was just banded last Friday. I had a 35.9 BMI when I was submitted to insurance (with apnea, high blood pressure, etc.) I was approved.

I think what you are thinking is am I big enough that I need this help? Can't I just do it on my own without surgical intervention. I realized that I needed this even though I am considered a low bmi candidate. I can lose the weight, and I lose rather quickly. However, once the novelty wears off, I go right back to my gorging on food. I got the band because I am expecting itt o prvent me from being ABLE to gorge at single sittings.

It isn't for everyone. And it IS a surgery. You are right to really think it all through.

Good luck to you!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
