Vitamins and other Supplements before Lap Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I plan on having my surgery about 3 to 4 months from now. Im starting to eat better now and take Vitamins. Can anyone recommend what I should be taking? Im 40 so I guess a Caltrate 500+D would be good to start with. Im confused about what Vitamin, there are so many and they have all different things in them The One A Day Womens has Calcium so maybe thats not good to start with, do I need Iron? Is just a regular multi vitamin ok? Its so confusing? If anyone can give me advice on what would be good for me and also what I can continue after my surgery. Thanks all of you, This board has been so helpfull!

My famly practice doctor says a regular Multivitamin is fine for adults, with extra Calcium for women. I take an additional B-complex on the advice of my banding doc, and in winter take extra C as well. For most people a regular multi is plenty. The rest is all marketing. ;)

Too many Vitamins just = expensive urine in my opinion. I did start dosing up though, I'd been eating crap for way too long. I take a multi and I take just a nip of Floradix for Iron everyday too as my preop testing showed I was just a little low. I should probably take Calcium as well. But you can go on and on and on cant you - fish oil, herbal supplements etc etc.

I take Source of Life liquid Vitamin by Nature's Plus. It is so wonderful that now my mother who is 66 and not banded takes it. I can really tell a difference in my energy level.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
