Anyone else feel this way??

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 3 of my all liquid preop diet and I found myself at a baby shower today...starving and surrounded by all the yummy things that go along with them...more than being hungry I realized that I was sad. Sad that I could not enjoy it, sad that I couldn't join in the fun. It's like I'm breaking up with a bad boyfriend...but I still love him. Anyone else feeling like that?? Makes me wonder why it is I feel sad rather than angry or even proud that I was able to stay away from it all. Just thought I would throw that thought out there and see if anyone else had similar experiences.

Yes, I can relate. I've felt sad, but most of the time it's very matter of fact. Like I know that the foods that I can't have still taste, smeel, and look good, it's not like that changed. But, I state to myself and others that I can't eat that stuff because it's bad for my body, an allergy that I have an extreme reaction to. I'm a food addict, recovering daily. It would be strange if we didn't experience different emotions during our transformation, know that's it's ok and try to stay present with that throughout your journey.

God Bless You-

Rebecca

Oh yes, I can relate. Guess what, it will pass! Hard to believe, I know. There was a point I honestly couldn't imagine not wanting to eat, but it will happen! The desire does decrease....really it does :)

Thanks Rebecca...I know it is normal I'm just surprised at the sadness. Figured I'd be more angry...both at myself and the fact that I can't eat it...not sad. I appreciate your input very much.

Sophinator I've been feeling the exact same way since my first consult and tomorrow is my surgery....I really hope this passes. I had to quit smoking too so between that and not eating my fav foods I was in mourning...seriously. fingers crossed

I went to a Superbowl party 4 days post op and found myself sitting around a table with my friends thinking-i don't even like these people! Then I realized due to not being able to eat I was not having a good time. It was so weird to think that I can't have a good time with my friends without food. Really a testament to the severity of my food addiction.

You've got to try to turn it around so that you're the "normal" one. We just take for granted the way we use food at every celebration, to punctuate the day etc. An occasional indulgence is absolutely fine and you can and will do that again, but not right now on your pre op diet,, and you pick your occasions. Just coz everyone else eats that stuff at every occasion, doesnt make it fine - they're suffering from it - they're fat, bloated unhealthy, whatever. They ARE killing themselves eating like that, even if you cant see the evidence in their bodies. YOU are making another choice, its as simple as that. There's no "cant" about it and nothing to be sad about, you're better educated and are making better choices.

Jerseygirl...I bet that was rough! I hope everything went well today and that you recover quickly!!

Thinsista...I'm sure that was a tough one, the superbowl party. I had to giggle at the thought of you sitting there thinking you don't even like those people. Oh what are habits have done to us!! I think a good example of my addiction was today when I was sitting next to a family I didn't know at the movies. The little girl next to me had a huge bowl of popcorn and as I saw out of the corner of my eye all of the family just reaching in and grabbing handfuls I thought I wonder if they'd notice if I reached in and grabbed some too

Jachut...you're right...I know you're right...and I will just have to keep repeating this to myself when I feel sad or angry! Thanks :)

LOL! That's so funny about thinking about eating the little girl's popcorn!

I can relate to feeling sad about not being able to eat like everyone else. But I want to look at it the way alcoholics look at drinking. But at least alcoholics can go cold turkey. I think that might be actually easier than the way we have to do it. We still HAVE to eat, just not as much. Can you imagine an alcoholic being told that they can have 1 drink a day but that's it? How many do you think would actually recover? This is going to be really hard I think. But I know I can do it. I just need some help. Stay strong, we're worth it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
