I've been out of Lap Band Surgery for 4 years. I recently developed GERD, better known as acid reflux disease. I mean I have it real bad! I can't even swallow Water by itself, without it coming back up. I know you get similar symptoms when you eat to much or too fast, but this is not the case. Do I need an adjustment, is the band slipping??? Let me know. It really hurts.

well... I have no experience with it but from what I've read on this site, it sort of sounds like a slip? You should see a dr.

I too have had some problems with gerd. My doctor told me to take 1 nexium in the am and 1 in the pm. It cleared up in a few days. Get the gerneric equilvalent, much cheaper.

Hi,

I am 3 years out with the lap band and have just had an unfill due to what my surgeon says is a prolapse!!!! Why after 3 years? Had a major esophageal cramping session this morning and actually was going to go the ER when it suddenly relaxed as fast as it came on. WTH? I did have some reflux issues a couple of months ago but they've been managed so I am really discouraged by this whole chain of events. Really don't want to go through all of this again if I don't have to. My surgeon wants me to come back in 3 weeks for another upper GI to see if it will straighten itself out but he didn't look too sure that it would happen like that. This is so weird. I have no idea what it is supposed to feel like when the band slips. Anyone?

I suddenly started having acid reflux as well. The nurse thought my band may have slipped, but after talking to the doctor he thought it was gallstones. He was correct. They sent me for an ultrasound and sure enough... gallstones. He did prescribe Nexium for the acid reflux (which helped tremendously) and will probably have to take my gallbladder out in the next few months. Good luck to you.

I am only just 7 months since surgery, everything is going well but immediately after my last fill I seemed to have developed this 'gerd'.

this only is most aggravated at night when i lay down, even if i have had nothing to eat at all......i wake in the middle of the night with small amounts of acid in my mouth, with my throat burning.

It is so bad tonite that i have sought out this forum for the first time to try and find answers, as its 4am and now i cannot sleep due to the burning sensation..i know it is definitely not gall stones, as i have had gall bladder removed, but would love some information

Wonder if it's too tight? I had a similar session like that about 2 months ago and only got through it with Zantac150 an hour before bed, but I still keep the Gaviscon tablets handy.

I am over 5 years banded and suffered a lot of reflux lately also. We unfilled the band and the doc started me on Prevacid every morning. I got immediate relief. He indicated that if my band HAD slipped, that many times unfilling it makes it correct itself. I had reflux at night along with severe episodes of pain that seemed to be releived by walking around and 'burping" alot! That was a month ago, now I am "refilled" and doing much better this time. I hope you get relief and answers soon! Good Luck!

I take Pepcid nightly. Really helps. But I got acid reflux right now because I am too tight. Getting loosed up in a couple of weeks.

Yeah I am now sitting on my couch dealing with the same issue. It will either be if I eat anything and a little is left over in my pouch because I chewed it insufficiently, or if I haven't eaten at all and it seems my stomach acid needs attention. I will be completely asleep and then BOOM coughing, clearing my throat, etc. My problem is I know I'm banded too tightly, because I have been to my doctor about this before, but A) this is my sweet spot, and B) I don't have health insurance any more. I can't have them touch my port without literally owing $150, and as a broke college student I can't afford that. If this is my sweet spot, will taking Nexium help at all? I'm really tired of it and it makes me extremely uncomfortable to sleep in my own room with my roommate.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
